The ever-changing era of college athletics with revenue sharing and name, image and likeness payments has meant conferences treading on uneven waters thus far.
But university leaders, including Arizona President Suresh Garimella, have forged a letter laying out a University Participant Agreement and shared it with fellow NCAA Division 1 institutions in an effort to “address these problems” and turn “principle into practice.”
The agreement urges schools to abide by the new standards put in place in the House v. NCAA settlement and is “a way to protect the College Sports Commission from legal challenges the NCAA has faced in enforcing rules,” according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich.
“Inconsistency across institutions erodes trust, creating uncertainty that ultimately harms the very people this enterprise exists to serve: our student-athletes,” the letter states. “(The University Participant Agreement) requires participating universities to support the CSC’s standards implementing the House settlement, including NIL reporting, revenue-sharing compliance, monitoring, audits and enforcement.”
Besides these requirements, the letter also informs schools that while the agreement is not “perfect,” the collective group of Division 1 bodies does not have the “luxury of waiting” for things to be ironed out.
The letter argues that if every school plays by the rules, any and all disputes can be resolved through an “agreed-upon process” and this will ensure transparency and accountability.
“Stability is not created by new rules alone, but by a willingness to live by them,” the letter adds.
In addition to aid from the CSC, which was born in response to both NIL and revenue sharing being unleashed, the letter states that those participating must “accept clear oversight and enforcement, including investigation authority, penalties and binding neutral arbitration.”
All Power Four conferences were represented in the letter’s creation, with Georgia President Jere Morehead representing the SEC, Virginia Tech President Timothy Sands the ACC and Washington President Robert J. Jones the Big Ten.
