Two people were rescued from a lake in a northwest suburb after they fell in while attempting to go ice fishing Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Around 4:38 p.m., the Cary Fire Protection District was dispatched to the 6200 block of Londonderry Drive in unincorporated Cary for reports of people calling out for help in Lake Killarney.
Two off-duty firefighters who were in the area observed an adult and a teenager approximately 50 to 75 feet off the shore who had fallen through the ice while attempting to go ice fishing, authorities said. Both were struggling to keep their heads above water.
One of the off-duty firefighters entered the water through the ice and rescued the teenager, authorities said. Fire crews arrived moments later and began rescue operations for the adult.
Both were rescued within approximately eight minutes of the fire department’s arrival, authorities said.
A neighboring resident also fell through the ice while trying to rescue the adult and teenager prior to the emergency crews’ arrival but was able to get himself to shore, where he was later evaluated, authorities said.
All three were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.
Aerial video from NBC Chicago Sky 5 showed several firetrucks and emergency responders in the area around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday.
Neighbors told NBC Chicago they saw a “huge line” of emergency vehicles on Londonderry Drive during the rescue.
Some neighbors also told NBC Chicago they are reconsidering ice fishing this season after the incident.
“Ice conditions can change rapidly and are often unsafe, even when they appear solid,” the Cary Fire Protection District warned in a statement.
