There’s no shortage of NFL head-coaching openings, with plenty of departures coming after the regular season.
Including the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans, who moved on midseason from head coaches Brian Daboll and Brian Callahan, respectively, the tally of vacancies now sits at nine.
Here’s a running list of the additional coaching jobs that have opened since the end of the regular season.
Mike Tomlin stepping down as Pittsburgh Steelers head coach
Tyler Drake
Mike Tomlin is stepping down from his role as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The move comes after the Steelers’ AFC Wild Card loss to the Houston Texans on Monday night.
Tomlin has been the lead man in Pittsburgh since 2007. Across his 19 seasons with the franchise, the Steelers had 12 playoff appearances, eight AFC North titles and a Super Bowl win. He’s 193-114-2 all-time as a head coach.
Given he is stepping down from his post, the Steelers will retain his coaching rights until his current contract is up. He has one more year left on a deal that also includes a team option in 2027.

If a prospective team wanted to look into hiring Tomlin, it would need to work out a trade or some sort of compensation with Pittsburgh, similar to what the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos did with Sean Payton in 2023.
With Tomlin’s decision, Pittsburgh is now on the hunt for its fourth head coach since 1969.
Miami Dolphins fire head coach Mike McDaniel
Bailey Leasure
The Miami Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel on Thursday after four seasons with the team.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news.
McDaniel’s time with the Dolphins ends after going 35-33 during his tenure. Under McDaniel, the Dolphins made the playoffs in his first two seasons, but missed the postseason in his last two years.
Schefter added that McDaniel’s firing will mark the first of several offseason decisions for the Dolphins as questions linger about quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s future in Miami.
Tagovailoa is owed $54 million in guaranteed money in 2026 as part of a four-year contract extension he signed in 2024.
Baltimore Ravens fire John Harbaugh after 18 seasons
Alex Weiner
The Baltimore Ravens fired head coach John Harbaugh on Tuesday after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
The Ravens were a Tyler Loop missed field goal as time expired away from clinching a playoff berth on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Harbaugh is expected to be the hottest name on the coaching carousel this offseason, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He is a CEO-style head coach who spent most of his career as a special teams coordinator before landing in Baltimore.
Harbaugh had been the second-longest tenured head coach in the league, spending 18 years leading the Ravens. Mike Tomlin of the Steelers is the longest-tenured head coach at 19 seasons.
Baltimore made the playoffs 12 times during his tenure and only had three losing seasons. The Ravens won Super Bowl 47 for the 2012 season and have suffered a series of playoff disappointments since then.
The Ravens lost the AFC title game in 2023 to the Kansas City Chiefs by seven and fell in the divisional round in 2024 against the Buffalo Bills by two after tight end Mark Andrews dropped the game-tying two-point conversion late.
Schefter reported that multiple teams with openings will pivot toward pursuing Harbaugh.
Arizona Cardinals fire head coach Jonathan Gannon
Tyler Drake
The Arizona Cardinals fired head coach Jonathan Gannon on Monday following the end of his third season on the job, the team announced.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news.
The firing came after the Cardinals’ 37-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday ended their season with nine straight losses.
General manager Monti Ossenfort will remain with the team and conduct the search for a new head coach, per reports.
Gannon’s tenure in Arizona came to an end with the Cardinals finishing with a 3-14 record (0-6 in the NFC West) in 2025. That’s the most losses in a season in franchise history and more defeats than the other three NFC West teams endured combined.
The head coach helped establish a new culture, but he leaves Arizona with a 15-36 record.
Las Vegas Raiders moving on from Pete Carroll
The Associated Press
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders fired Pete Carroll on Monday after just one year, meaning they will enter their third consecutive season with a new coach in charge.
Carroll expressed high hopes upon taking over, saying he was used to double-digit victories and he expected the same in Las Vegas. But the Raiders went 3-14, going on a 10-game losing streak before finishing with a 14-12 victory over Kansas City on Sunday.
Now the question is where the Raiders head next under the direction of owner Mark Davis, minority owner Tom Brady and general manager John Spytek. Davis said in a statement that Spytek would work with Brady to find the next coach.
“Together, they will guide football decisions with a shared focus on leadership, culture, and alignment with the organization’s long-term vision and goals,” Davis said.
The club could seek an offensive-minded coach to work with a young quarterback should the Raiders draft Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza or Dante Moore with the first overall pick.
That formula worked well this season in Chicago with coach Ben Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams and in Jacksonville with coach Liam Coen and QB Trevor Lawrence. Both teams are playoff bound after experiencing losing seasons the year before.
Carroll, 74, was the NFL’s oldest head coach, and he came to Las Vegas with the intent of winning right away. He got his wish of bringing in quarterback Geno Smith, whom he coached in Seattle. Neither got the success they expected, with Smith throwing a league-high 17 interceptions as the losses piled up.
The Raiders have run through coaches since appearing in the Super Bowl in the 2002 season. They have made the playoffs just twice since then, losing both wild-card games.

Cleveland Browns fire head coach Kevin Stefanski after 6 seasons
The Associated Press
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns have fired coach Kevin Stefanski after six seasons.
Stefanski is the fourth NFL coach fired this season, joining Tennessee’s Brian Callahan, the New York Giants’ Brian Daboll and Atlanta’s Raheem Morris.
The Browns won their final two games to finish 5-12, including a 20-18 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
The 43-year-old Stefanski is a two-time AP NFL Coach of the Year. He led Cleveland to playoff appearances in 2020 and 2023. The Browns’ 48-37 victory over Pittsburgh in an AFC wild-card round game was the franchise’s first since 1993.
Ironically, Stefanski was not on the Browns’ sideline for that game after he tested positive for COVID-19. He watched the game from the basement at his house.
Stefanski is the sixth coach fired since owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam bought the franchise in 2012. The five coaches hired by the Haslams have a 73-139-1 regular-season record since 2013, the second-worst mark in the NFL.
Falcons make immediate changes at coach, GM despite winning streak
The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons fired coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot on Sunday night, announcing the moves hours after the team completed its second straight 8-9 finish under Morris and eighth consecutive losing season.
Morris said after Sunday’s 19-17 win over the New Orleans Saints that he expected to return for a third season. Instead, his 16-18 record was not enough for him to keep his job after the year began with optimism that the Falcons would reach the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
“I have great personal affinity for both Raheem and Terry and appreciate their hard work and dedication to the Falcons, but I believe we need new leadership in these roles moving forward,” owner Arthur Blank said in a statement.
“The decision to move away from people who represent the organization so well and have a shared commitment to the values that are important to the organization is not an easy one, but the results on the field have not met our expectations or those of our fans and leadership. I wish Raheem and Terry the absolute best in their future pursuits.”
The Falcons finished with four straight wins and in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC South, but the streak came after the team had been eliminated from playoff contention. Carolina won the division because it had a better record in divisional games.
