Rolling Stones Keith Richards to Release Signed 1960s Gibson Guitar

Legendary guitarist Keith Richards is giving fans and collectors a rare chance to own a piece of rock history.

Gibson has announced a new collaboration with the Rolling Stones co-founder that will see two limited-edition recreations of Richards’ iconic black 1960 Gibson ES-355 released worldwide. Handcrafted by Gibson Custom in Nashville, the guitars were developed in close collaboration with Richards himself and replicate one of the most recognizable instruments of his career.

Only 50 of the Collector’s Editions have been produced. Each is signed by Richards both on the f-hole label and on the back of the headstock and will be sold exclusively through Gibson.com and the Gibson Garage locations in Nashville and London. An additional 100 Signed Label versions—signed on the f-hole label only—will be available through select Gibson Custom dealers and Gibson Garage stores.

For more than six decades, Richards—often dubbed the “Human Riff”—has been the rhythmic backbone of the rock group, his black 1960 ES-355 often considered a holy grail among guitarists. Richards first began using the model in 1969, bringing it into the studio during the sessions for Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St., and it has remained a staple of band’s tours since 1997.

Richards himself explained the instrument’s significance, saying, “This is my standard-tuning six-string; this is the other side of my thing…Put it through just about any amp, and it will sound the way you want it, because this has so much more room for expression.”

The release arrives shortly after Richards checked in with fans at the start of the new year. On January 2, the 82-year-old shared a video message on Instagram filmed at home, seated in front of a brightly lit Christmas tree reflecting on the year ahead. “Here we go again, another one,” he said. “And I do bless you all and wish you all the best, you know, for the holidays. Happy New Year. And, you know, I hope to see you here in the next one, you know, keep going. Bless you all. One love.”

While reports suggest plans for a Rolling Stones stadium tour were recently shelved, Richards’ latest collaboration proves that—even off the road—his influence remains very much alive.
