Weld County distributes free radon test kits for Radon Awareness Month

The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment will once again offer free radon test kits to residents while supplies last as part of Radon Action Month.

As part of the county’s Monday morning proclamation declaring January Radon Action Month, the county will provide short-term radon kits to residents upon request. Weld County has received funding from the Colorado State Health Department through the state indoor radon grants, allowing it to continue distributing test kits through the county’s radon program as it has for over 20 years.

“During those 20-plus years, we have distributed over 10,000 radon test kits to Weld County residents,” Department of Public Health and Environment Manager Gabri Vergara said. “Of those 10,000 homes that have been tested, approximately 50% have had elevated radon levels. Fortunately, mitigation of those radon levels is very simple and an economical fix.”

Radon is a radioactive gas that is the natural byproduct of decaying uranium found in soil and rock beneath homes. Prolonged radon exposure is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and is responsible for more than 20,000 deaths annually, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

“This is serious. You have no idea it’s there, and you can be getting ill health effects without quite realizing what the cause of it is,” Commissioner Kevin Ross said.  “I would encourage everyone to get tested. Make sure that you don’t have it. The remedies are very inexpensive.”

Radon mitigation systems can cost from $1,000 to $2,000, according to the Colorado Public Health and Environment Department.

However, if your home exceeds safe radon limits, property owners can apply for low-income radon mitigation assistance to help implement affordable mitigation systems.

The county encourages residents to test their homes, as more people will be indoors as temperatures drop. However, with homes sealed up for the winter, radon can more easily become trapped and reach harmful levels.
