‘90s Indie Icon Finally Goes Gold After 35 Years

Cat Power celebrates a major milestone after being in the industry for over three decades.

The 53-year-old solo artist, whose real name is Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshall, is widely known for her evolving mix of melancholic indie rock, soul, folk and blues.

    For decades, after creating music that left a lasting impact on the indie and alternative scenes, she has finally received her long-overdue recognition as an artist whose work has shaped generations of listeners since the early 1990s.

    In an Instagram post, the indie icon shared a photo showing a music plaque with Gold certification from the RIAA for the song “Sea of Love,” which has garnered over 100 million streams on Spotify.

    The 2000 track was included on her fifth studio album, The Covers Record and was also featured on the 2007 Juno soundtrack.

    “5 years as Cat Power & just got this in the mail. Cat Power’s “Sea of Love” has approximately 119,286,031 streams on Spotify. Played my uncle from Appalachia’s autoharp, which he sold me for $150 back in 1996, last minute recording in Brooklyn at Rare Book Room. Imagine selling 119,286,031 singles. What do you think my one & only gold single of my career is worth, asking for a friend,” she wrote.

    Fans on social media celebrated the milestone, flooding her comment section with celebratory messages.

    “Absolutely priceless,” one wrote.

    “Absolutely love this album and this track!” a commenter said.

    Fans also shared personal stories about their connection with the song.

    “I fell in love with you when I first heard 'Sea of Love' and promptly learned it so I could play it on piano to my heart's content. Only my favorite songs and records have that kind of effect on me. Thank you, Cat,” a follower said.

    “My husband and I danced to this song as our first dance at our wedding,” a fan shared.

    Besides receiving her first Gold record, Cat Power is gearing up for another highlight of her music career.

    The Atlanta-born singer-songwriter has announced her upcoming tour in celebration of the 20th anniversary of her seventh studio album, The Greatest.

    Cat Power is set to launch her U.S and Canada tour in February, running till March.

    Moreover, she will also have a European and U.K tour in October, including Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, with the final shows scheduled in Ireland this November.
