The Chicago Bears are thrilling fans in the area with their play on the field, but what is the latest on their stadium project?
The soap opera around the stadium has taken a variety of twists and turns in recent months, with the team announcing that they would potentially look at property in Indiana after being told by state officials that the project “wasn’t a priority,” according to team CEO Kevin Warren.
Still, the team owns property in Arlington Heights that they could develop into a stadium, and they showcased that property to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell while he was in town for last weekend’s game between the Bears and Packers.
Gregory Berger, a Bears fan who lives in the suburbs, snapped a photo of the interaction at the proposed stadium site.
“I saw three SUVs parked on the Arlington Park property. And then all of the sudden my eyes lit up because I saw Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner.”
Even amid the Bears’ continued interest in the Arlington Heights site, Indiana officials have indicated they’re willing to roll out the red carpet if the Monsters of the Midway want to cross the border.
“Hoosiers would be happy to roll out the red carpet for the Bears fans and welcome their historic franchise to our great state,” Rep. Marlin Stutzman said in a statement.
Marc Ganis, a sports business analyst, said the state of Illinois needs to take the Indiana stadium idea seriously.
“It would be a political miscalculation of the highest order if Illinois screws this up,” he said.
The idea of the Bears moving to Indiana has been roundly debated, but another team is already planning to move its stadium across state lines, as the Kansas City Chiefs revealed that they plan to build a new stadium in Kansas after spending decades in Missouri.
One option that clearly is off the table? The Bears building a stadium within Chicago city limits, at least according to Ganis.
“There needs to come a reality to the Chicago contingent, that Chicago isn’t on the table any longer. It will not happen. There will not be a new stadium within the city of Chicago,” he said.
