For his efforts last week, Watson just won Western Conference Player of the Week, an impressive honor and the first of his NBA career.

“During the week, Watson averaged 24.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.8 blocks in 38.7 minutes while shooting 50.0% from the field, 70.0% from three, and 66.7% from the free-throw line, helping Denver finish the week with a 3-1 record. He ranked first in the West in three-point percentage (min. 10 3FG), fifth in the West in total points, and was one of three players in the West to shoot above 50% from the field and above 60% from three during the week (min. three games played).”
The Nuggets needed someone to step up amid the litany of injuries. In last Monday’s overtime thriller against the Philadelphia 76ers, it was Watson and Jalen Pickett. In Wednesday’s game vs the the Boston Celtics, it was Watson and Jamal Murray. Watson was the only Nuggets to score above 14 points vs the Atlanta Hawks in a loss on Friday (he scored 25). And yesterday, it was Aaron Gordon, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Watson to carry the offensive burden in a win over the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Nuggets have survived, in large part, because of Watson’s ascension into a first option scorer. He’s taking on tremendous responsibility and handling it with poise. Denver’s won games they shouldn’t have won, but Watson’s impact has been directly responsible for flipping the script.
It’s a real breakthrough moment for the fourth year pro out of UCLA. Watson deserves significant credit, and the league rewarded him with an impressive honor.
