More than 4,000 protesters took to the streets throughout the county over the weekend in response to a U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officer shooting a Minneapolis woman in the face, killing her, continue to reverberate throughout the country.
An Encinitas rally on Saturday drew more than a thousand protesters, while another in Escondido saw more than 500. Most of the locations drew hundreds, but even one in Julian saw at least 42 people protesting the shooting.
ICE officer Jonathan Ross fired a shot into the front left windshield of Renee Good’s SUV on Wednesday and two more into her open driver’s side window, killing her immediately. She was unarmed and not threatening him at the time.
Those at the scene and millions more in a now-viral video saw a different ICE officer attempt to open Good’s driver’s side door before the 37- year-old mother of three reversed and turned her wheels to the right in an apparent attempt to leave the scene before Ross approached the front of the vehicle, then fired.
President Donald Trump and others in his administration have claimed without evidence that Good was a danger to the officers.
However, the shooting, and the administration’s attempts to defend it, have been strongly condemned by the country.
“An ICE agent shot and killed a U.S. citizen and mother, and the Trump Administration’s response has been to obscure the facts rather than own the consequences,” San Diego County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer said.
“When the federal government responds to the loss of life with spin instead of accountability, people must speak out — peacefully, with care for one another, and moral clarity.”
Lawson-Remer called for peaceful protests.
“Peaceful protest is how communities have always forced change and defended democracy,” she said. “It is strongest when it is grounded in nonviolence, mutual care, and moral clarity.”
Richard Cannon, an organizer with 50501 North County San Diego, also denounced the administration.
“The president has openly embraced the use of violence against those he perceives as his enemies or those who speak out against him, whether directing a mob of angry people to invade the Capitol in an attempt to overturn an election, showing disdain and disregard of political assassinations (unless he believes they are on `his side’), or suggesting his followers assault protesters,” he said.
“There are at least five people who have died as a direct result of this top-down direction and agents’ lawless behavior, and it seems inevitable they will continue to operate without transparency or regard for the public’s safety until the American people demand and force accountability.”
