Not that I expected it would stop him from playing, but Matthew Stafford’s finger injury still feels like a notable deal.
The Los Angeles Rams quarterback suffered the injury in the team’s wild-card victory against the Carolina Panthers. Rams Head Coach Sean McVay told reporters that Stafford would be good to go for Sunday’s upcoming playoff game at Soldier Field despite the injury, which isn’t unexpected. But still … the injury (a sprained index finger on Stafford’s throwing hand) figures to be something to keep tabs on throughout the week and when the two teams take the field in the Divisional Round of the NFC playoffs.
Even with the finger injury, Matthew Stafford finished the wild-card round throwing for 304 yards and 3 touchdowns. He completed just 57.1 percent of his passes and threw an interception, too. So while I understand that he did a chunk of his best work after the injury, I don’t think an injury to the starting quarterback on the opposing sideline is something I want to gloss over. Stafford will still play. And I expect him to play at a high level. But there could be moments where a finger injury is problematic. At a minimum, it is something to watch on Sunday.

Matthew Stafford is putting together an epic season in his age-37 campaign. Stafford led the league in passing yards (4,707), touchdown passes (46), touchdown percentage (7.7%), and first-down throws (236) en route to earning first-team All-Pro honors this season. It is possible that the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback could be named the NFL’s MVP later this winter. Pretty wild where Stafford is when you consider how much time he missed during the offseason because of a serious back injury.

Let me be clear. Matthew Stafford is clearly a formidable foe. But he isn’t unstoppable. Bears fans know that all too well. After all, Chicago has held its own against Stafford. Sure, he is 12-10 against the Bears all-time. But it’s not as if that rivalry has been one-sided. Heck, the Bears beat Stafford and the Rams at Soldier Field in September 2024. And when these long-time adversaries meet again on Sunday, they’ll do so in what the forecast suggests will be frigid temperatures at Soldier Field — which could be a factor for a quarterback trying to grip a football with a sprained index finger on his throwing hand.
