On Tuesday night’s episode of The Rookie, the team is back in Los Angeles. And things are changing with Sgt. Wade Grey (Richard T. Jones), and they affect Sgt. Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) in a big way. Tim moves into Grey’s job, and Grey joins the international task force that was created to bring down the bad guys, as provided by Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan) as part of her immunity deal.
Parade has a first look at the changing of the guard in this exclusive sneak peek video provided by ABC.

“Being the boss isn’t just about getting the work done. You’ve got to play the smart, political game,” Grey tells Tim.
“I know,” Tim replies. “I’ve filled in for you before.”
“A day here or there is not the same,” Grey continues. “Look, Tim, you are the Watch Commander now. No acting, no interim, you’re him.”
They enter the Watch Commander’s office as Tim’s name is being put on the door, and Grey says, “Problem solving is never-ending, memos pile up, if you don’t have a system, you’ll fall behind.”
“Understood,” Tim says.

“That’s it. Any questions?” Grey asks.
“No, I’m good,” Tim says. “That’s my desk,” Tim points out when Grey continues to stand behind it.

“Right,” Grey says. “Sorry, it’s going to take some getting used to. So, if you need anything…”
“I know where the task force office is,” Tim says.

When we spoke to series creator/show runner Alexi Hawley earlier, we did ask him if there was going to be a problem with Tim taking over the Watch Commander job because now, he would be overseeing Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neill) again, and the two had just moved in together.
“They’re equal rank, so that’s what we’re navigating our way through,” Hawley explained. “At the end of the day, she’s also a sergeant and she becomes the sergeant supervisor, and given that their relationship is now ultimately not a dating situation but a more committed relationship, that’s where we’re living. It’s all above board and very clear what that professional and personal relationship is.”
The Rookie airs Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Streams next day on Hulu.
