Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez and Jon Gries, who portrayed Napoleon, Pedro and Uncle Rico respectively in the film “Napoleon Dynamite,” presented a viewing of the film and a live conversation at Tuscaloosa’s Historic Bama Theatre on Friday.
“Napoleon Dynamite,” released in 2004, is an independent, coming-of-age comedy film that has gained a large following due to its unique blend of quotable lines, memorable characters and offbeat humor. Members of the Tuscaloosa community gathered for the opportunity to meet the actors, ask questions, win fun prizes and enjoy the movie together.
Leading up to the event, Bama Theatre staff highlighted the significance of showing the movie and inviting the faces behind the characters.
“It’s one of those movies that is so iconic, and it’s a fan favorite that is loved by so many different groups of people,” said Grace Marrochello, marketing coordinator for the Bama Theatre. “It’s a really great event for the community to have something fun and entertaining to do. It’s not every day that you get to meet the main characters from such a recognized film.”
The passion of the fans contributed to the high energy of the night. Hannah Hall, manager of the Bama Theatre, added that she was looking forward to seeing the audience’s interactions and their enjoyment.
“I think seeing everybody dressed up has been something really fun for me to see,” Hall said. “They’re going to bring all of these people on stage and do games and stuff with them, so I think it’ll be great.”
Viewing the film at the classic Bama Theatre and hearing the firsthand perspectives of the cast allowed audience members to observe it like never before. Matt McCool, an attendee who saw “Napoleon Dynamite” in its theatrical debut in 2004, expressed his appreciation for the event.
“It was good to see it on the big screen. I watched it originally, and we’ve watched it hundreds of times in my house,” McCool said. “I’ve always liked Uncle Rico, and it was cool to see him.”
The cast members provided energetic performances that pleased spectators. They engaged the audience with scene reenactments, shared facts about the movie and told stories from behind the scenes.
“They’re great entertainers,” McCool said. “They really interacted, and everybody seemed to have a great time tonight.”
The event also drew in a younger generation of fans, such as 15-year-old Rachel Stracener, a Tuscaloosa resident who dressed up as the title character. She was one of the audience members recognized on stage, taking part in recreating Napoleon’s dance routine and receiving signed memorabilia.
“I love that we got to go on stage, and doing the dance is just so iconic,” Stracener said. “I’m super thankful.”
In a night full of laughs, reciting quotes and recalling past anecdotes, the stars of “Napoleon Dynamite” and its local fans were drawn together to create lasting memories. Hosting the beloved film and its cast in the Tuscaloosa community proved to be an overall positive experience.
“It’s amazing that they came to Bama Theatre,” Stracener said. “We love Tuscaloosa, and I love that people are coming here.”
