Students are back on campus for the spring semester, and with them comes a busy stretch for Alabama athletics. From the start of basketball conference play to a record-breaking gymnastics performance, here are my winners of the week.
Alabama women’s basketball
The Crimson Tide women’s basketball team picked up a program-defining victory Thursday in blowout fashion over No. 6 Kentucky 64-51. This was Alabama’s highest ranked win since 1997.
Guard Jessica Timmons took the game over offensively, scoring 24 points on 8/16 shooting. Guard Karly Weathers anchored the defense with seven steals to go along with her eight rebounds and 7 points.
Head coach Kristy Curry said she was “Just really proud, great team defensive effort against a really well-coached and really good Kentucky team offensively.”
“I just loved our kids’ tenacity, and the will to win tonight was special,” Curry said.
Alabama gymnastics
Alabama gymnastics opened the season on the road with a win versus Clemson Friday. The team’s score of 197.475 marked the highest opening meet score in program history.
A chief contributor for the Crimson Tide was freshman Azaraya Ra-Akbar, who took home the uneven bars event title with a score of 9.975, earning a perfect 10 from one of the judges.
“I’m extremely excited about how this team started out tonight,” Alabama head coach Ashley Johnston said. “One of our main goals was to compete like it was our sixth meet of the season, and not like it was our first.”
Nigel Chambers
The Alabama diving team wrapped up competition at the Tennessee Invite on Friday with sophomore diver Nigel Chambers finishing fourth overall on the platform. Chambers, a 2025 platform All-American, recorded a score of 326.10.
Head coach Margo Geer called the Tennessee Invite a “great test in preparation for SECs in a month.”
Maddie Padelski
Alabama soccer forward Maddie Padelski became the second member of the Crimson Tide’s 2025 team to earn a National Women’s Soccer League contract as the sophomore inked a deal with the Portland Thorns on Thursday.
Padelski scored eight goals for Alabama over the course of her two years in Tuscaloosa. Six came last season to tie her for third on the team in the category.
Both swimming and diving teams
The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both dominated Georgia Tech at home Saturday, completing a sweep of the Yellow Jackets.
The 13th-ranked men’s team won 205-93 while the 16th-ranked women’s team rolled to a 233-66 victory.
Senior Emily Jones put on a spectacle, breaking three Alabama Aquatic Center records in the 100 backstroke, 400 medley relay and 200 free relay.
“What a great way to kick off the new year,” Geer said. “The team performed great today, and I’m proud of their hard work and effort over the break to come back stronger.”
