Landmans Paulina Chavez Reveals Terrifying Part of Filming Rape Scene

Paulina Chavez is breaking her silence after Landman‘s penultimate episode ended with her character, Ariana, being sexually assaulted.

During the Sunday, January 11, episode of the hit Paramount+ series, Ariana was nearly done with her shift at The Patch Cafe when she went to the back alley to check in on her infant son. An unruly customer who previously had issues with Ariana attacked and tried to rape her. Ariana’s fiancé, Cooper (Jacob Lofland), saved her just in time and nearly beat the man to death.

The story line took Chavez by “surprise” after Ariana’s season 2 arc largely focused on her professional and personal development.

“This season we were going in blind as to where our characters were going,” Chavez, 23, exclusively told Us Weekly. “Reading that episode, I have an app that highlights my lines automatically. So I saw the beginning of the little cute moment that Cooper and Ariana had before she had to work. I was like, ‘Oh, how cute and easy.'”

The actress was then taken aback by what came next, adding, “I see the ending and I was like, ‘Oh, this is devastating.’ It was definitely a shock for me, and I was very nervous. But I was also very excited to do some stunt work.”

Cocreator Taylor Sheridan was present as a resource for Chavez, who had to wrap her head around the heartbreaking twist.

“We had a conversation about the logistics of how we were going to shoot it. He told me we were going to shoot it in different parts. We were going to shoot it all together, and their main focus was my comfort and making sure that I was good,” she recalled. “It is a woman’s worst nightmare. It’s the constant thing that goes through your mind, and in that moment, you don’t expect it. Ariana thinks it’s a safe place, and then it’s not.”

Chavez continued: “I remember preparing for it. Having that conversation with Taylor, he was like, ‘No matter what, I want you to continue fighting. Because Ariana is a fighter, at no point do I want you giving up and surrendering to your fate. Even though he hit you with a rock and you’re almost unconscious, you’re still there and are still fighting.’ That’s something that’s so important.”

Filming the harrowing scene was a way for Chavez to raise awareness, saying, “I don’t think people realize how common abuse is, and most abuse comes from people that are so close to you. It could be your partner and you don’t have the words to explain it. I feel like it’s very important to shed a light on how unsafe it is in this world — especially for women but for everyone. Especially if you’re in the LGBTQ+ community, it is very unsafe. It’s very important to shed a light on that.”

The moment was broken up into several shots.

“The shirt rip and the pants, that’s when it was the most terrifying and felt the most real. I definitely did need some time to recover from that very first take because it felt so real and terrifying,” Chavez continued. “It’s such a vulnerable position to be in, and then to have a group of people watching and recording — I just took that and ran with it for the following takes. The body doesn’t differentiate what’s real and what’s fake. That’s the hardest part, acting-wise, is you need to learn the self-care afterwards.”

Chavez was also grateful for the intimacy coordinator on set, sharing, “She was always there checking in and making sure that I was comfortable with everything. We had our costumes person always with a robe ready to cover me — especially when the shirt was being ripped. I don’t even know how many shirts we ripped, but she was just always there making sure I was comfortable and making sure I was hydrated. Then we had a privacy tent for me to change but also to get myself situated again for the next take.”

Looking ahead, Chavez remains hopeful about how Ariana will heal from this with help from her fiancé.

“I do believe that Cooper and Ariana are two people that are gonna fight for each other no matter what. I think with any relationship, you choose the person and you guys choose each other. Anything will bring you closer together and will tear you all apart,” she noted. “For Ariana, she’s not going to let this moment define her. She’s more of a fighter, and thankfully it didn’t traumatize her too much or all the way. But it is an eye-opener for sure with how much the system needs to root for women more and believe women.”
