I Can’t Stop Watching This Caleb Williams Throw

Michael Jordan over Craig Ehlo. Patrick Kane’s backhander for the hat trick against the Canucks. Caleb Williams’ 4th-and-8 throw to Rome Odunze in the 4th Quarter.

By no means am I saying the Bears are on their way to dynasty runs like Michael Jordan’s Bulls or the Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews era Blackhawks. But if we’re fortunate enough to see Caleb Williams lead the Bears to a Super Bowl at one point, we’re going to look back at that throw as the official stamp of arrival. Jordan and Kane didn’t win titles in the years they pulled off the iconic moments mentioned above. But they both clearly (and loudly!) confirmed that — when the moments were the biggest — they were ready for them. Jordan and Kane used those moments to catapult to greatness. Caleb could be next.

I don’t care if it feels like I’m overreacting or living with too much recency bias. I don’t care if I sound like a homer. But Caleb Williams’ throw last night, under the circumstances, is certainly the best throw I’ve ever seen a Bears quarterback make, and one of the best throws I’ve ever seen in general. Rolling left, a defender chasing him down, nearly grabbing his feet, fourth Down, if the Bears don’t convert, the game and the season are over, and we’re talking about how the team couldn’t handle the moment. Oh, and it was against this city’s boogeyman, who had owned us for 30+ years.

    Caleb Williams Has Arrived

In the eyes of Bears fans, Caleb Williams arrived much earlier this season. Saturday’s game was a national coming out party for Chicago’s QB1. He has been pulling off comeback after comeback all season long, and he’s shown he has what it takes to be a very good NFL quarterback. But being a very good NFL quarterback and winning in the playoffs are two very different things. We saw it get to Caleb and to Ben Johnson as well, in the first half. There was a lot of pressing, frustration, and panic. However, combined with the defense settling in, Williams kept playing.

For a lot of young quarterbacks, it can take years to learn what it takes to win in the postseason. But for Caleb Williams, it only took about 35 minutes.

Twice in three weeks, Caleb has made all-time throws that will go down in Bears history as some of, if not the greatest, throws the historic franchise has ever seen. Both of them were to beat their oldest rival, too. Sure, last night’s wasn’t to officially win the game. But without it, do we look back on the first Packers win as much or as fondly if the Bears bowed out in a 27-16 loss at home to Green Bay less than a month later? Probably not.

Iconic. Remarkable. Insane. Ridiculous. Call it whatever you want. But that’s the throw that, at least to me, officially announced Caleb Williams’ arrival. Buckle up, Bears fans. We’re in for a fun ride.
