A legendary rock star just stepped out from behind one of The Masked Singer’s most unexpected costumes—and viewers were left genuinely stunned.
During Saturday night’s (January 10) episode of The Masked Singer UK, the glittery Yak was sent home following a performance of Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical.” Moments later, the mask came off to reveal John Lydon, the punk rock trailblazer best known to generations of music fans as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols.
At 69, Lydon’s appearance marked one of the most surprising reveals of the season so far—and one few viewers correctly predicted.

Why John Lydon Joined 'The Masked Singer'
View this post on InstagramSpeaking after his elimination, Lydon explained that his goal wasn’t to give the game away too early.
Rather than leaning into the vocal style people might expect from him, he said he wanted to show a different side of himself—one focused more on fun than familiarity. The Yak performance, he explained, was about surprising audiences rather than sending them racing toward the correct guess.
"Rather than going up there and doing sing-along and guessing who I am straight away, I thought, let's show the other side of me - an absolute fun-star," said Lydon when he was unmasked.

Once the reveal aired, social media quickly filled with shocked reactions—many from viewers who were convinced Yak was someone else entirely.
“I was way off from guessing John Lydon as Yak—what a shock ?,” one fan wrote on Instagram.
Several viewers admitted they were convinced they were hearing a completely different British TV personality, with one writing, “I was SO confident this was Basil Brush,” while another joked, “Got this completely wrong as all I could hear was Basil Brush lol ?.”
Others threw out names like Reece Shearsmith, Harry Hill, and Warwick Davis before the mask finally came off. As one fan summed it up: “What a reveal—I didn’t get that right at all.”

This Isn’t Lydon’s First 'Masked Singer' Rodeo
While the UK reveal came as a shock, longtime Masked Singer fans may remember that this wasn’t Lydon’s first time under the mask.
Back in 2021, Lydon competed on The Masked Singer (U.S.), where he appeared as Jester during season 6. He ultimately finished in eighth place in a season won by Jewel as Queen of Hearts, with Todrick Hall placing second as Bull.
At the time, Lydon revealed he joined the U.S. version partly in hopes of bringing joy to his wife, Nora Forster, during her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Forster passed away in April 2023.
"I thought it would be really good because it meant my lovely wife, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, might get a great sense of fun out of it if she managed to guess who it was," he told Billboard at the time. "We’ve lived together for 47 years, Nora and I, so she must have some clues as to who I am and what I can get up to."
