Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has seen his team execute some incredible comebacks, but before the season he showed his team what turned out to be a perfect bit of game film.
The Bears pulled off the latest of their incredible comebacks on Saturday when they erased an 18-point deficit to beat the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field, and after the game, Johnson revealed one of the motivational moves he pulled off before the season even began.
Johnson revealed to reporters that he had shown his players the highlights of Super Bowl LI, which saw the New England Patriots erase a 28-3 deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons for an improbable championship.
“We have two players on our roster that were part of both those teams,” he said. “Grady (Jarrett) was with Atlanta and Joe Thuney was with New England. It was just great to get perspective from both of those players of how that game went down.”
The coach said that there was a critical lesson he wanted to impart from that game, which was one of the most incredible comebacks in NFL history.
“I think it’s just a good lesson to be learned that it’s 28-3 in the middle of the third quarter, and yet the game still is being played and there is a lot of time left,” he said. “That was my message to the group. Just reminding them that this has been done before, and rather than saying, ‘woe is me and oh, crap, we’re in a hole,’ it’s more, this is a great opportunity for us to turn this around into a game we’ll never forget, and that’s what they did.”
Interestingly enough, the Bears cemented a place in NFL history alongside that game between the Patriots and Falcons. According to ESPN, the Bears’ comeback from 15 points down to start the fourth quarter marked the first time that a team has erased that large of a deficit that late in the game since that Super Bowl triumph for New England, and marked just the fourth such comeback in NFL playoff history.
Fortunately for Jarrett, he was on the right side of the comeback this time, as the Bears won their first playoff game in 15 years on Saturday.
