CAIRO, Jan 11 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty reiterated Cairo’s full support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia as a cornerstone of stability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
Abdelatty made the remarks during a meeting with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya on the sidelines of an extraordinary session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers in Jeddah, as part of ongoing consultations and coordination between the two countries.
The Egyptian minister stressed the depth of the historic and fraternal ties between Egypt and Kuwait, underscoring their shared commitment to furthering bilateral cooperation in all fields, especially in the economic, trade and investment sectors.
He underlined the importance of building on the positive momentum generated by recent high-level exchanges in a way that serves the mutual interests of the two peoples.
The two sides exchanged views on a number of regional developments of common concern, especially the situation in Gaza.
Abdelatty said regional and international efforts should be stepped up to implement the second phase of the US president’s plan, including the announcement of a temporary Palestinian technocratic committee to run day-to-day affairs in the enclave and the deployment of an international stabilization force.
On Somalia, Abdelatty said Israel’s unilateral and illegal recognition of the so-called “Somaliland” region constituted a blatant violation of the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia and undermined international law, the UN Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.
He said the move set a dangerous precedent that threatens regional and international peace and security, calling for a unified stance to support Somalia and for coordinated efforts to promote stability in Somalia and the Horn of Africa.
The talks also covered Yemen with Abdelatty reiterating Egypt’s firm support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Yemen and the preservation of its state institutions.
He stressed the need to intensify regional efforts to consolidate de-escalation, reduce tensions and resume a Yemeni-Yemeni political process leading to a comprehensive settlement to restore security and stability. (MENA)
