Police Charge Ex-Husband With the Murders of Ohio Dentist and His Wife

Police have made an arrest in connection to the murders of Ohio dentist Spencer Tepe and his wife, Monique Tepe, who were found shot to death in their home more than a week ago.

Michael David McKee, Monique’s ex-husband, was taken into custody on Saturday, January 10, in Illinois, and has been formally charged with murdering the couple, according to a Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson who spoke to Us Weekly.

McKee, 39, was arrested in Winnebago County in Illinois just before noon local time.

He will remain in custody until he is extradited to Ohio’s Franklin County, where he is set to appear for a hearing on Monday, January 12. Detectives were able to link McKee, who lives in Chicago, to the murders after reviewing surveillance video that captured his car leaving the area.

Records show McKee graduated from Ohio State University’s medical sch00l and has active licenses to perform vascular surgeries in Illinois and California. He was formerly licensed in Nevada, where the Columbus Dispatch reported he’s named in an ongoing personal injury lawsuit.

Investigators said that the Tepes were shot and killed in the upstairs of their Columbus home between 2:00 and 5:00 a.m. on December 30, 2025.

The pair lived in Columbus’ Weinland Park neighborhood with their two young children and a goldendoodle, the Dispatch has reported. The children were not harmed.

Footage shared by the Columbus Division of Police showed the individual wearing a black hoodie and pants that appear light in color.

While speaking to WSYX on Thursday, January 8, Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant said, “We know that there are a lot of concerns and a lot of questions surrounding this case.”

An online obituary for the couple, who met online, reads, “Spencer and Monique met online and quickly grew their relationship into a solid foundation of love and respect with a side of goofiness.”

They were married during a private ceremony attended only by their loved ones on December 13, 2020, according to the obituary.

They were both the “life of the party,” according to friends, who said they would host several gatherings for family and friends, the obituary says.

Spencer, 37, was “passionate about dentistry,” playing soccer and golf, “entertaining family and friends,” and focusing on “taking care of his family,” according to the obituary.

Monique, 39, “was a stay-at-home mom known for her bright smile, infectious laugh, caring heart, and bubbly personality.”

On the morning of December 30, one of Spencer Tepe’s colleagues at Athens Dental Depot called the police around 9 a.m. after he did not show for work, according to the Dispatch.

This led police to conduct a well-being check at the dentist’s home. The newspaper has since reported that an officer initially went to the wrong home that morning.

More than a week before the killings, on the morning of December 19, 2025, a woman who lived near the couple called 911 about someone “banging” on her door, Fox News reported, citing a 911 transcript.

The woman told a dispatcher she did not know who was at her home, according to the outlet. Call logs from the incident said “the problem left” about 15 minutes later.

A remembrance service and a celebration of life will be held for the couple on Sunday, January 11, 2026.

The Dispatch reported that Monique was married to McKee in August 2015. She filed for divorce less than two years later in May 2017.
