Tens of thousands of people marched in Minneapolis on Saturday to protest the fatal shooting of a woman by a federal immigration officer there and the shooting of two people in Oregon.

The protest was one of hundreds planned for towns and cities across San Diego and much of the country over the weekend as Minneapolis remains on edge over the killing of Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.

“We’re all living in fear right now,” said Meghan Moore, a mother of two from Minneapolis who joined the protest. “ICE is creating an environment where nobody feels safe and that’s unacceptable.”

Two of the local protests took place in Mission Valley and Mira Mesa, where people hung signs over a freeway overpass and demonstrated in front of a community shopping center.

The main message displayed over Interstate 8, read “They murdered Renee – ICE Out for Good!” with a U.S. flag in the middle of the words. Those in Mira Mesa gathered at a busy intersection, Westview Parkway and Mira Mesa Boulevard, holding signs up to passing drivers, including ones that read, “We are peaceful protesters, not terrorists” and “ICE = Ignore Chaos + Evil.”

Community protests also were set for Pacific Beach, Rancho Bernardo, Chula Vista, Del Mar and Encinitas. Others are scheduled for Sunday in Otay Mesa, Escondido, Julian, Oceanside and Poway.

San Diegans have joined in the protests since Wednesday night, hours after the ICE officer shot Good to death. They marched in Little Italy and held rallies at the downtown federal building.

Police have reported no violent incidents during the protests, but on Friday shut down an area along West Broadway in front of the federal building to check out a “suspicious device.” After about 90 minutes, they determined that the item was not hazardous.

On Friday night, at a protest outside a Minneapolis hotel that attracted about 1,000 people, demonstrators threw ice, snow and rocks at officers, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said. One officer suffered minor injuries after being struck with a piece of ice; 29 people were cited and released, O’Hara said.

In Minneapolis, Mayor Jacob Frey stressed that while most protests have been peaceful, those who cause damage to property or put others in danger will be arrested. He faulted “agitators that are trying to rile up large crowds.”

“This is what Donald Trump wants,” Frey said of the president who has demanded massive immigration enforcement efforts in several U.S. cities. “He wants us to take the bait.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz echoed the call for peace.

“Trump sent thousands of armed federal officers into our state, and it took just one day for them to kill someone,” Walz posted on social media. “Now he wants nothing more than to see chaos distract from that horrific action. Don’t give him what he wants.”

Steven Eubanks, 51, said he felt compelled to attend a protest in Durham, North Carolina, because of the “horrifying” killing in Minneapolis.

“We can’t allow it,” Eubanks said. “We have to stand up.”

Indivisible, a social movement organization that formed to resist the Trump administration, said the nationwide protests were scheduled in many states, including Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, Ohio and Florida.
