A medical emergency was the cause of the fiery Tesla crash that caused a shutdown of Route 59 near Naperville Friday, authorities said.
A 37-year-old man was driving his 2025 Tesla Model Y southbound on Route 59 Friday afternoon when he appeared to have suffered a medical emergency while approaching Cantore Road, police said.
He sideswiped another vehicle before leaving the roadway and striking a tree. After the crash, his Tesla burst into flames, authorities said.
An off-duty Naperville police officer witnessed the crash and pulled the driver from the Tesla, police said.
Around 5:00 p.m., aerial video footage from NBC Sky 5 shows traffic building in the area as several emergency vehicles and fire trucks blocked all traffic on Route 59 between Cantore Avenue and 95th Street. Several firefighters could be seen tending to a crashed Tesla with debris scattered around it, video showed.
The driver suffered minor burns and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
