The Cavaliers won 19 of the 20 events on the schedule—the women went 10-for-10 while the men claimed nine victories. The story of the day wasn’t close racing but rather dominant performances from both new and established faces. Most of the men’s swimmers tackled their bread-and-butter events, while several women focused on secondary races.

There were two double event winners on the women’s side: junior Claire Curzan and freshman Sophia Umstead.

Curzan walked away with wins in the 100 (47.16) and 200 free (1:43.50), with the latter representing a season best. Her best times remain 46.74 and 1:41.99 from February of last season. Her 47.01 season best in the 100 free situates her ninth in the NCAA standings, while today’s 1:43.50 in the 200 free slots her at 20th.

She was dominant in both races, taking the 100 by 2.39 seconds and the 200 by 0.97 seconds over sophomore teammate Katie Grimes, who logged a season best of her own in 1:44.47.

Behind Curzan in the 100 was Nina Jazy, who made her Cavalier debut. She finished runner-up to Curzan in the 100 free with her first-ever yards swim of 49.55. Jazy owns bests of 24.9/54.7 in the long-course sprint freestyles, so there is likely more to come once postseason action commences.

Umstead took her wins in the 200 IM (1:56.51) and 200 breast (2:09.72), winning by about a second and a half in both with best times. Coming into the day, her personal bests were 1:56.98 and 2:10.63 from earlier in the season.

Grimes was also notably in the 200 breast, posting 2:13.39, a best time by 1.48 seconds and her first personal best since arriving in Charlottesville.

Other standout swims on the women’s side included graduate student Bryn Greenwaldt‘s 21.61 50 free win, her second-fastest ever behind the 21.58 she swam in November, which ranks 12th in the NCAA. Senior Aimee Canny also posted a 1:54.49 lifetime best in the 200 fly, an off-event for the middle-distance free and breaststroke multi-time NCAA finalist.

On the men’s side, freshman Maximus Williamson and sophomore David King were the double event winners.

Williamson first won the 200 IM with a time of 1:42.44 before taking the 100 free in 42.28. Neither were season bests; he’s been as quick as 1:41.88 and 41.54 in November. His best times in those events remain the 1:40.81 and 41.54 he produced pre-college in February 2024 and February 2025, respectively.

King took the 200 free (1:34.09) and 200 back (1:41.09), about two seconds shy of his season bests of 1:31.83 and 1:38.36, respectively.

Other highlight swims included freshman Thomas Heilman‘s 1:41.97 200 fly win, though he was 2.88 seconds shy of his season best of 1:39.09, which ranks third in the NCAA. His personal best remains 1:38.95 from pre-college.

Penn State’s lone winner on the day was senior Mariano Lazzerini, who clocked 1:52.52 in the 200 breaststroke. He’s been 1:50.93 so far this season, a lifetime best that ranks him sixth nationwide.
