Supporters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) attacked a US-led international coalition base in the Ghuwayran neighborhood of al-Hasakah (northeastern Syria) today, Saturday, 10 January, voicing anger over what they described as an American “abandonment” of Kurdish fighters in Aleppo.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in al-Hasakah said dozens of protesters gathered outside the base gate, kicking the gates and shouting insults and profanities targeting the United States and US President Donald Trump, protesting US policy toward the latest military developments in northern Syria.
The escalation followed a call by the Revolutionary Youth Movement, affiliated with the Autonomous Administration, to stage a sit-in outside the base this afternoon. Chants quickly turned into an attempt to force entry through the outer gates, amid heightened security tensions in the area.
The targeted US base is located in Ghuwayran, near al-Sinaa Prison, also known as Ghwayran Prison, which holds thousands of detainees from the Islamic State group. The area has seen intensified security measures by the SDF and the international coalition.
US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack said today on X that his talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa included the latest developments in Aleppo and the broader path forward in Syria’s transitional phase.
Barrack added that President Donald Trump understands “this moment represents a pivotal opportunity to build a new Syria, a unified state in which all sects, including Arabs, Kurds, Druze, Christians, Alawites, Turkmen, Assyrians and others, are treated with respect and dignity,” and where all components are granted effective participation in governance and security institutions.
He said the US president lifted sanctions on Syria, “seeking to give Syria a chance to move forward.”
Barrack noted that the US government welcomes what he described as a “historic transition” in Syria, and that it is offering support to the Syrian government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa in its efforts to stabilize the country, rebuild national institutions, and fulfill Syrians’ aspirations for peace, security, and prosperity.
These developments come amid fast-moving ground changes in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods of Aleppo (Aleppo city, northern Syria), both predominantly Kurdish areas. Government forces took control of the two neighborhoods after they had been held by fighters affiliated with the SDF.
The neighborhoods’ local administration declared “general mobilization” on Friday, 9 January, to confront what it called “attempts at forced displacement” and demographic change, after earlier understandings reached in April 2025 with the Syrian government collapsed, ending with government forces taking control of the two areas.
Buses are now preparing to evacuate SDF fighters from the neighborhoods to eastern Syria, following clashes that lasted three days.
