Today contributor Jill Martin will be undergoing emergency surgery in the days ahead.
"Just when you think the fight is over, life reminds you that healing isn’t always linear," Martin, 49, said on the Friday, Jan. 9 episode of Today.
Martin was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and started treatment straight away. Her oncologists came up with a plan that included a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. Thankfully, the treatment worked, and Martin has been in remission for more than a year. However, her doctors recently noticed something that needs immediate attention.
View this post on Instagram“It’s preventative and proactive — an emergency only in the sense that if we don’t act now, it could turn into something much bigger," Martin said on Today, explaining that her skin was damaged by her radiation treatments. Her upcoming surgery will repair the damaged skin.
“I feel worn out and grateful all at once," she said. "Sometimes it feels like it never really ends. And still — I’m grateful. Grateful for early action, for great doctors, and for the chance to keep moving forward."
Martin made it clear that her cancer has not returned and while her upcoming surgery is related, it's due to a complication from treatment rather than the disease itself.
Fans sent Martin prayers, love, and support on social media after she shared the health update.
"Stay strong Jill. We love you and god bless. Sending healing prayers and vibes your way," one comment read.
"Sending love and hugs and wishing you a speedy recovery," another Instagram user said.
"Sending healing vibes and prayers for a full and complete recovery. God bless," a third person wrote.
Martin said that she will spend three nights in the hospital and then will be discharged where she will continue healing at home.
