Caltrans: Culvert replacement improves fish habitat in Gualala River

A culvert replacement project along Highway 1 will improve fish habitat in southwestern Mendocino County, the California Department of Transportation reported this week.

According Caltrans, its District 1 recently “completed an emergency culvert replacement project on Route 1 at Old Stage Road in Gualala,” located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County.”

The project included installing over 300 feet of a “new 8-foot diameter fiberglass pipe … to improve drainage and allow fish passage from the Gualala River into China Gulch. Designed with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and National Marine Fisheries Service, the new culvert includes baffles to aid fish migration by slowing water and creating resting spots.”

Caltrans also noted that it “partnered with the Redwood Coast Land Conservancy to hydroseed and replant native vegetation, enhancing the waterway between the culvert and Gualala River. Over 800 native marsh plants will be added for salmon and other fish habitats, (and) these improvements will be monitored throughout the winter.”

The contractor for the $7 million project was Wylatti Resource Management.

    Survey deadline extended

In other news this week related to the Mendocino Coast, Mendocino County officials reported that they extended a deadline for accepting comments on a survey designed to collect public input on coastal recreational opportunities.

“Due to strong public interest and high participation, the deadline to submit responses has been extended to Jan. 23 at midnight,” officials reported in a press release this week. The previous deadline was Jan. 4, and the survey can be accessed here.

In a previous press release announcing the survey, officials explained that “as coastal visitation continues to rise, understanding how residents and visitors use coastal parks, trails, beaches, and access points is essential. Survey responses will guide long-term planning, support coastal resource protection, and help ensure that recreational facilities and access remain sustainable and responsive to community needs. All residents, visitors, coastal stakeholders, and recreation users are encouraged to participate.”

Some of the questions on the survey include:

What types of recreational amenities do you think are most needed, such as restrooms, trails, dog-friendly areas? Are there specific locations where you feel recreational access is lacking, or could be improved? Would you support public acquisition of land for recreation or conservation purposes? Do you have any concerns about increased recreational use on the Coast? What should be the Top Priorities for future recreation planning on The Coast: Protecting Natural Resources; Expanding Public Access; Improving Existing Facilities; Supporting Tourism And The Local Economy; Providing Equitable Access For All Users; Preserving Scenic Views, or Enhancing Trail Connectivity.
