A man in Illinois was arrested after his girlfriend jumped out of his moving car to escape after he hit her, causing her to suffer a cut on her forehead that exposed her skull.
Thomas A. Welch has been accused of attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery and kidnapping.
An arrest affidavit obtained by WCIA stated that deputies with the Moultrie County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene around 1 a.m. on December 31, 2025, after they received a report that a woman — covered in blood — had run up to a stranger’s home in Kirksville, Illinois, looking for help. The woman later told authorities that she jumped out of a moving car in order to get away from Welch, 31.
The victim said that she was riding in a car with Welch and friend Cody Kimery in the Mattoon area when she and her boyfriend started to argue, per the affidavit. She claimed that Welch threatened to kill her and he even stopped the car to hit her with an object, which caused her to start bleeding.
The woman said that she screamed at Welch, demanding to be let out of the vehicle. However, Welch continued to drive and Kimery, 33, allegedly refused to let her out and prevented her from leaving, according to the affidavit.

Welch continued to drive for about an hour longer before the victim claimed she jumped from the car while it was traveling about 20 mph. After she escaped, she ran to a neighbor’s house to ask for help.
“I see this girl walking out of the mist, coming out and walking in the mist,” neighbor Jeremiah Seaman told WCIA about the incident. “And she was covered head to toe in blood.”
The neighbor continued, “I asked her, ‘What’s wrong, what happened?’She said she didn’t really remember anything and that she jumped out of a vehicle. I said, ‘well let me get you something warm.’ It scared everybody, you know, to see somebody like that.”
Seaman called 911 and waited with the victim until cops arrived. The affidavit stated that she was then taken to the hospital, where she received staples to close the wound on her head.
Authorities later managed to track down Welch. His vehicle had a dashcam inside, which allegedly captured Welch and Kimery forcing the woman to stay in the vehicle despite her begging to be let out.
“I’m going to have to kill her bro,” Welch allegedly said to Kimery in the dashcam footage.
