Oh: Addison Russell is Coming to CubsCon for the 2016 World Series Anniversary Reunion

Nine days ago, as the clock struck midnight, the calendar flipped to 2026. And that means we are officially in the 10-year anniversary of the 2016 Chicago Cubs World Series championship. And because of that, the Cubs have invited as many of the (non-active) 2016 World Series roster back to Chicago for the Cubs Convention.

As previously reported, the list of attendees does not include any active players, including Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, Aroldis Chapman, Willson Contreras, Javier Baez, Carl Edwards Jr., or Jorge Soler … which is a bit of a bummer, as a lot of those guys were key contributors. But you take what you can get.

Some other notable non-attendees include David Ross (ouch … hope there are no hard feelings there), Jake Arrieta (he’s been around lately, so I’m modestly surprised he won’t be there), and Ben Zobrist. Speaking of which, Zobrist, Mike Montgomery, Matt Szczur, and Travis Wood were all included among the originally reported 2016 attendees, but none are on the latest list.

One player who was NOT on the initial list of attendees, but is on the Cubs’ most recent announcement, is going to come as a surprise to many: Addison Russell.

Addison Russell to Attend CubsCon 2026

Former Cubs shortstop Addison Russell will be in attendance, which is absolutely certain to raise some eyebrows and anger many.

In case you forgot, Russell’s ex-wife, Melisa Reidy-Russell, accused the former big leaguer of emotional, verbal, and physical abuse — allegations Russell initially denied. However, after an official investigation, Russell was placed on administrative leave and eventually suspended (without appeal from Russell, who later took responsibility) for 40 games for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse policy. The suspension began on September 21, 2018, and continued into the 2019 season.

After serving his suspension, Addison Russell had the following to say (via MLB.com):

“I am accountable for my past actions,” Russell said. “I’m not proud of the person I was, but I do want to own this issue and take responsibility for the hurt and the pain that I have caused Melisa. And, for that, I am sorry.”

“My teammates have shown nothing but support for me and my family,” Russell said. “I think through this whole process, the person that has been inflicted the most in this process is Melisa. And what I want to say to everyone here today, and also to her, is that I want to own those actions. And I am sorry for the hurt that I have caused Melisa and the pain that I put her through. And I am [making] my best efforts to become a better person.”

“I want to own my actions. I want to be accountable for the hurt that I put Melisa through and the pain that she went through. That’s what I want to own.”

If you’re looking for more details, ESPN also has an article up with more comments from Russell, Reidy, Commissioner Rob Manfred, and then Cubs President Theo Epstein.

Frankly, I’m a little surprised Addison Russell has been invited and is going to attend. So I’m sure many of you are, too.

I guess you can make your own judgment if you want to see him or not, but I find this to be a poor and misguided decision by the Cubs, even knowing that Russell played 82 more games with the team after his suspension (so it’s not like this is the first time we’ve seen him in a Cubs uniform since the allegations, apology, and discipline). Whether you care or not, this is going to be a huge distraction and raincloud over what would otherwise be a good-vibes-only reunion.

Addison Russell was a big part of that 2016 team – no one is denying that – but that doesn’t necessarily mean he needs to be celebrated … or that anyone wants to celebrate him. Again, I am not telling YOU how to feel about this, but I am certain I am not alone in finding this choice to be the wrong one for the event.
