A 17-year-old girl is in custody after a stabbing incident Friday morning at a far north suburban high school left another teen girl hospitalized with critical injuries, police said.
The incident took place Friday morning on campus at Zion-Benton Township High School, at 3901 W. 21st St. in Zion.
The 17-year-old accused in the stabbing, a student at the school, fled after the incident but was quickly taken into custody without incident, police said. A school resource officer on site rendered aid to the victim until Zion-Fire Rescue and other crews arrived, authorities added.
The victim, also a 17-year-old student at the school, was transported to a nearby hospital, police said, and was last listed in critical but stable condition.
An email sent D126 families and obtained by NBC Chicago about the stabbing called the incident “isolated,” and said the school was placed on a “Code Yellow” protocol as a result.
“At this time, there is no immediate threat to students or staff,” the letter said. “Administration and safety personnel are actively monitoring the situation and following established safety protocols.”
District 126 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez told NBC Chicago reporter Vi Nguyen the incident began around 8:40 a.m., when one student stabbed another in the hallway in front of a classroom. According to Rodriguez, the school utilizes metal detectors.
