REPORT: Lions Reach Out to Mike McDaniel About Offensive Coordinator Job

The Detroit Lions have reportedly wasted little time to show interest in Mike McDaniel as an offensive coordinator candidate.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoprt reports the Lions have “reached out” to McDaniel, who was fired as the Miami Dolphins head coach earlier on Thursday. And while I am no stranger to the NFL moving quickly, that the Lions moved at warp speed to target Mike McDaniel so quickly:

The Lions didn’t wait too long to part ways with John Morton, making him a one-and-done offensive coordinator just days after the team’s win in the regular-season finale against the Chicago Bears. For what it’s worth, Detroit’s offense wasn’t awful under Morton. That group scored 481 points (28.3 per game) and collected 6,344 scrimmage yards (fifth-most in the NFL) last season. But inconsistency was a problem throughout the season, particularly down the stretch. Hence, I can understand why the Lions pulled the plug on that experiment.

    Mike McDaniel and the Lions?

Here is a sentence I’ll hate writing: I suppose if anyone is equipped to fill the gargantuan shoes left behind by Ben Johnson leaving Motor City to take on the Chicago Bears head coaching position, it would be Mike McDaniel. Because even though things flopped the last two years with the Dolphins, Miami never totally bottomed out. I reckon that is a testament to McDaniel being able to make the most out of a crummy situation the last two seasons. But when things weren’t falling apart on South Beach, that Dolphins offense was one of the most entertaining in the league.

There was a belief that Bears Offensive Coordinator Declan Doyle could be a candidate for the Lions vacant offensive coordinator position. And for what it’s worth, Chicago appears to be preparing for the possibility that teams around the league come poking around and hiring assistants off of Ben Johnson’s staff. However, the idea of Mike McDaniel coaching that Lions offense is something I don’t want to see come to fruition. Hopefully, another team will give him a head-coaching opportunity and make Detroit continue on with its search.
