Authorities released the cause of death for Christian Law, a vet student who was found dead after a night out with friends in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood while he was home for holiday break.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, Law’s primary cause of death was alcohol and cocaine toxicity, with hypothermia as a secondary cause.
On the night of Dec. 13, Law was out with friends at Kashmir, a cocktail bar located at 160 North Ogden Avenue in West Town, before heading to a house party on Greenview Avenue, his family told NBC Chicago in late December.
Around 7 a.m. the following morning, a woman found Law on the sidewalk while she was out walking her dog. She said he was not wearing a coat. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Law was last seen alive on Greenview Avenue south of North Avenue and north of Division Street.
His family said a friend who was with him that night was questioned by police, and his phone, ID and credit cards were initially missing but later were recovered.
Weeks after his death, Law’s family said “absolutely nothing” about the situation made sense to them.

Law’s family said he loved animals and was pursuing his dreams of becoming a veterinarian. He had only been in town for about 24 hours when he was found dead, his family said. He was visiting for the holidays from Ross University where he was in his third semester.
