Following the revelation that Willow Cain (Katelyn MacMullen) shot Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) four months ago on General Hospital, MacMullen is opening up about exploring a darker turn for her longtime character.
While the identity of the shooter was revealed to audiences on Thursday, January 8, 2026, episode of the ABC soap opera, the information had been kept from much of the cast, prior to filming the reveal.
In an interview with TV Insider’s Stephanie Sloan, MacMullen shared that she only learned the truth shortly before filming the reveal.
“I found out about a week and a half before we shot the flashback scenes,” the actress said.
For months, viewers have watched as a list of suspects, including Willow, were questioned and even arrested in connection with the shooting of Drew. In Thursday’s episode, the truth was finally revealed when a series of flashbacks showed that Willow had shot Drew in the back.
MacMullen said she believes Willow felt like Drew was “isolating her and keeping her in a position of powerlessness.”
Addressing how the revelation shifted her performance, MacMullen explained, “Once I knew that she was the shooter, it was more like, ‘OK, now she’s kind of fighting for her life here.’”

MacMullen also reflected on the unique nature of the soap opera format and how it shaped her experience playing Willow over time. “Living through all these things that have brought out the worst or the best in her has been, on one hand, challenging, but also a cool gift of working in this particular genre where you’re playing the character for so long,” she shared.
Looking ahead, MacMullen teased that Willow is “shocked and determined.“
“There was so much pent-up anger, and it’s finally come out,” she explained. “The cool thing about this story is that it’s gone in so many different directions, and the possibilities are endless, and I’m excited to see where it goes.”
