ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert is now up for a brief period of strong winds Friday late afternoon into the evening hours. This will arrive with a cold front, and only last for about an hour or two in any one location. Issues should be limited, but there could be a handful of power outages as weak limbs are knocked loose. The greatest risk of any damage looks to be Rochester west toward Buffalo, along the Thruway corridor. This is where winds may push 45-55 mph briefly. Winds then die down very quickly into the evening, and the Yellow Alert will be dropped.
Before that, it’ll be a much warmer Friday, as our January thaw continues. We’ll start the day near 50 degrees with a balmy breeze and a few showers. It won’t be a washout, but we’ll be dodging some raindrops from time to time throughout the day, especially the morning hours. Winds will noticeable, especially in the higher elevations of the Finger Lakes, where some gusts will push 40mph through the morning hours. But those strongest winds will come late afternoon. The cold front will drop our temperatures from near 60 around 3PM into the 30s by 8PM.
Another round of rain will arrive on Saturday afternoon and evening, ahead of our next storm that’ll drop our temperatures and ramp up the winds once again for Sunday. Sunday will turn windy again, with some scattered snow showers into the afternoon and evening. This will be lake effect, but accumulations should be minor.
The first half of next week will be fairly quiet, but our next system on Wednesday may begin to change our weather pattern back to a more wintry one, with better chances of some snow by later next week and beyond. Stay tuned.
