Cardinals head-coaching candidates: Arizona requests to interview Packers DC Jeff Hafley

The Arizona Cardinals are in an all too familiar place following Monday’s firing of head coach Jonathan Gannon, but they’ve pivoted quickly by requesting interviews with candidates for the job opening.

Looking for their fifth head coach since 2017 and second under current general manager Monti Ossenfort, Arizona is back into full-on search mode.

    And it starts this week.

A look at those being tied to Arizona’s opening so far:

    Cardinals head-coaching tracker

Jeff Hafley, Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator and former Boston College head coach

The Cardinals requested to interview Hafley, reports Albert Breer.

He has been the defensive coordinator for Green Bay the last two years. The Packers ranked 12th in yards per game allowed (311.8) and 11th in points allowed (21.2) this past regular season after ranking sixth in each last year, his first on the job.

Hafley was Boston College’s head coach from 2020-23, going 22-26 there.

A defensive backs coach like the outgoing Gannon, Halfey has NFL experience starting in 2012 as an assistant defensive backs coach with Tampa Bay under Greg Schiano. He earned a promotion to head of the position group the next season.

He worked for Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine from 2014-15 before a stint under Chip Kelly and then Jim Harbaugh from 2016-18.

Hafley returned to college in 2019 and was co-defensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State in current head coach Ryan Day’s first year on the job before leaving to lead Boston College.

Raheem Morris, former Atlanta Falcons head coach

The Cardinals will interview Morris next week, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Morris will also interview with the Giants and Titans.

Morris spent the past two seasons as the head coach in Atlanta, finishing both campaigns 8-9 and missing the playoffs. Atlanta finished 2025 on a four-game winning streak, but Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot were fired after the season finale on Sunday.

It was Morris’ second stint leading Atlanta, as he served as the organization’s interim head coach after Dann Quinn was fired in 2020. The Falcons hired Arthur Smith the following offseason, and Morris joined the Rams as their defensive coordinator.

Los Angeles won the Super Bowl with Morris running the defense, which finished top 10 in takeaways, sacks and quarterback rating allowed in 2021. He was L.A.’s DC for two years until returning to the Falcons.

Morris has over 20 years of NFL coaching experience with stops in Tampa Bay, Washington, Atlanta and L.A. He was on Tampa Bay’s staff for its Super Bowl 37 win under Jon Gruden and became the team’s head coach from 2009-11.

His overall head coaching record is 37-56.

Matt Nagy, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator and former Bears head coach

The Cardinals have requested an interview with Nagy and will meet with the offensive coordinator on Friday, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Garafolo adds Nagy will also interview with Tennessee and Las Vegas on Thursday.

Nagy has spent the past three seasons in Kansas City, serving as the Chiefs offensive coordinator since 2023. Since taking over, the Chiefs have been among the top 10 offenses once (2023). They’ve been no better than 15th in points scored.

Before his most recent stint with Kansas City, Nagy was the head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2018-21.

He made the postseason twice with Chicago, posting a 34-31 record and winning the NFC North once (2018).

Nagy got his NFL start with the Philadelphia Eagles as a coaching intern in 2008. He was eventually promoted to coach’s assistant in 2010 and offensive quality control coach in 2011.

He then headed to Kansas City for his first stint, taking over as quarterbacks coach in 2013 before moving to offensive coordinator in 2016.

Thomas Brown, New England Patriots passing game coordinator

The Cardinals have requested an interview with Brown, according to NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe.

Brown has been instrumental in the development of second-year quarterback Drake Maye, as the Patriots prepare for a playoff run beginning with the AFC Wild Card round against the Los Angeles Chargers.

He has interim head-coaching experience, as Brown was inserted into the role with the Chicago Bears in 2024 after Matt Eberflus’ firing 12 games into the season. He had been serving as the Bears offensive coordinator after coming aboard as the passing game coordinator that season.

Besides his current service under Mike Vrabel, Brown was under Rams head coach Sean McVay from 2020-2022 as a tight ends and running backs coach.

    Klint Kubiak, Seattle Seahawks OC

The Cardinals have requested an interview with Kubiak, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

Kubiak is currently preparing for the postseason after the Seahawks earned a first-round bye behind a 14-3 mark.

In his first season with the Seahawks, Seattle posted a top 10 offense (351.4 per game) and was third in points scored (28.4).

The New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders and Atlanta Falcons have also requested an interview with Kubiak.

Robert Saleh, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator and former Jets head coach

Arizona has requested an interview with Saleh, per Breer.

Ranking the Cardinals' job desirability with the other NFL head coaching openings

Saleh returned to the NFC West this past season as San Francisco’s defensive coordinator after serving as an offensive consultant for the Green Bay Packers the year prior.

The 49ers closed the 2025 regular season with the 20th-best defense (340.2 yards per game) despite season-ending injuries to key players like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner and allowed the 13th-fewest points (21.8) in Saleh’s return.

The coordinator’s first stint with the 49ers was from 2017-2020 and included a Super Bowl appearance.

Saleh has head-coaching experience, too, having coached the New York Jets from 2021-24 before his midseason firing. He finished with a 20-36 mark as head coach.

    Anthony Weaver, Miami Dolphins DC

Arizona has requested an interview with Weaver, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Weaver has served as the Dolphins DC the past two seasons after three years with the Baltimore Ravens. With Baltimore, he acted as a run game coordinator, defensive line coach and assistant head coach.

He saw instant success in Miami behind the fourth-best defense (314.3 yards per game) while allowing the 10th-fewest points (21.4) in 2024.

The impressive play didn’t pour over into this past season, though, with the Dolphins finishing 22nd in total yards (348.8 per game) and 24th in scoring (24.9).

Vance Joseph, Denver Broncos DC and former Cardinals DC

Arizona’s stone turning began with the reported interview of Joseph this week, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Broncos defensive coordinator has helped form a stingy defense for the No. 1 seed in the AFC this postseason.

In doing so, Joseph has improved his stock for another run at a head-coaching gig.

And he has connections to the Cardinals, having not only served as defensive coordinator from 2019-22 under former head coach Kliff Kingsbury but also interviewing for Arizona’s head-coaching vacancy in 2023.

Gannon ended up securing the job, with Joseph heading to Denver for a second stint. He’s been far more successful this time around with the Broncos after lasting two years as Denver’s head coach from 2017-18 and posting an 11-21 record.
