Following the death of eight-time Daytime Emmy winner Tony Geary, fans have wondered how General Hospital would honor the actor who helped define the long-running ABC soap. Now, ABC executive Nathan Varni has addressed the show’s current plans.
Varni, who serves as ABC’s Head of Programming, shared the update on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that the General Hospital production team is preparing a tribute montage to honor Geary’s legacy on the series.

Following Geary’s retirement from the series in 2015, his iconic character of Luke Spencer was later written out of the show with the character being killed off-screen in 2022.
Luke’s ex-wife, Tracy Quartermain (Jane Elliot), returned to Port Charles to reveal that Luke had died in a cable car accident orchestrated by Luke’s longtime rival, Victor Cassadine.
The residents of Port Charles later paid tribute to the character during a memorial held at Luke’s former establishment, the Haunted Star.
In honor of Geary’s passing, General Hospital replayed his final 2015 episode on New Years Day.
For his portrayal of Luke Spencer, Geary won eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, with his first win occurring in 1982, and his final win in 2015, making him one of the most decorated actors in the genre’s history.
Geary officially retired from General Hospital in June 2015. Later returning for a brief guest appearance in May 2017 as part of a storyline connected to the temporary on-screen exit of his longtime co-star Jane Elliott.
