Olivia Rodrigo Announces New Cover Album Five Years After Its Release

Olivia Rodrigo is celebrating her debut album in the best possible way.

SOUR, which features her top hits such as "drivers license," "deja vu," "happier" and "good 4 u," catapulted Rodrigo to the pop star she is today. Fans and critics praised the singer for her relatable lyrics, which allowed her to break streaming records, dominate the charts and even win a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2022.

This year, the album will be turning five years old in May. To celebrate this feat, the 22-year-old singer shared on Instagram on Thursday morning that she will be releasing a series of reimagined SOUR covers performed by some of her favorite artists.

The rollout is already in motion. Kicking off the series, Rodrigo shared a reimagined cover of her breakout hit and debut single "drivers license," performed by David Byrne.

"we’re starting off insanely strong with an incredible reworking of 'drivers license' from one of my all-time heroes, David Byrne," Rodrigo wrote in her caption. "David is nothing short of a legend and I actually cried when I heard his version of this song."

She also revealed that a vinyl with Byrne's cover of "drivers license" and their version of "Burning the House Down" from their performance at Gov Ball last summer is available for pre-order.

So far, Rodrigo has not revealed the artists she will be collaborating with for the reimagined version of SOUR, but she has stated multiple times publicly that some of her idols include Taylor Swift, Lorde, Fiona Apple, Phoebe Bridgers, Jack White and The Cure. The "traitor" singer also cited Gracie Abrams, Avril Lavigne, St. Vincent and others, as influences for her debut album, while her second album, GUTS, leaned into a more punk and alternative rock sound, with inspiration from The White Stripes, Babes in Toyland and Rage Against the Machine.

When Rodrigo announced the new cover album, fans all over social media were super excited for the reimagined songs and even wrote out suggestions for artists to feature.

"ALANIS MORISSETTE DOING BRUTAL PLEASE," a fan wrote. The duo have been friends, and the 1990s pop star has served as a mentor to Rodrigo over the past few years.

"Oh my GOD I’m not ready for this line up ???," a fan commented. "I AM SOPROUD OF YOU."

"THIS IS INSANEEEE," another wrote. "can’t wait to hear all of the covers!"

"please PLEASE alanis morissette doing brutal im actually BEGGING," a fan commented on X.

One fan joked, "sabrina carpenter covering deja vu," a reference to long-standing rumors that “drivers license” and much of SOUR were inspired by Rodrigo’s relationship with her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett and his subsequent relationship with Carpenter. Despite being at the center of the viral "love triangle" in 2021, Rodrigo and Carpenter have since appeared to be on good terms, interacting at events such as the Grammys and the Met Gala. The "Manchild" singer also followed Rodrigo on X in May 2024.

"does that mean we can get gracie [abrams] to cover enough for you," a fan asked.

"alanis needs to be brutal and chappell [roan] jealously," a fan suggested. "olivia listen to me."

"so so excited and grateful to get to relive the best moments of our lives :')," a fan account dedicated to Rodrigo wrote. "LOVE U FOREVER."

"you’re actually the coolest to ever do it," one user said.
