Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar is giving fans more insight into the upcoming new series set in the world of Sunnydale.
The actress, who portrayed Buffy for seven seasons of the hit series that aired on The WB and UPN from 1997 to 2003, is working on the new iteration with Chloé Zhao for Hulu.
While a guest on the Shut Up, Evan podcast, Gellar, who is set to reprise the role of the beloved slayer, revealed, “It’s not a sequel, it’s not a reboot — it’s a continuation."
Explaining that it will be a treat to fans of the original, she clarified that it won't be about the original characters.

The Cruel Intentions star said the series will answer questions about where Buffy is now, adding, "and what is this world that Buffy lives in with her and without her."
“So it’s not a reboot, it’s not picking up with all of the same characters right away. It is not like a sequel… That’s why the name was even important to me — Buffy: New Sunnydale. It’s Buffy, but it’s also something else," she further explained.

She also noted that she learned a hard lesson about never saying never, as she was previously opposed to revisiting the world of Buffy, admitting, "I will eat my words, and I’m OK with that — I learned my lesson."
She explained one thing that was important to her about the continuation of the story, "I never saw how and why it could be as good [as the original series]. I’m not trying to be better. I just want to hold and honor the memory and what we created. I know sometimes that memory is conflicted for people about how they’re supposed to feel about it, but a lot of people put their blood, sweat, and tears into making what I think is an incredibly great show, and I’m incredibly proud of it.”
Gellar credited Zhao's passion with convincing her to think this was possible, but she hasn't rushed the process, acknowledging, “I know this seems like it’s taking a long time, and it’s because unless we are sure that it is exactly what we set out to do and that it makes sense to do it, we don’t want to sell you the legacy by not. When I know it’s perfect, then it will be out there, but I won’t do it unless I know it can be that.”
The star's comments caused a bit of confusion amongst fans, who took to Deadline's Instagram post to share their thoughts, with one noting, "It sounds like a sequel. It sounds like the events of Buffy happen and this takes places years later."
"Multiverse?" someone questioned, with another bluntly stating, "I'm confused."
"This may or may not work," another quipped, as someone felt as though she "Said a lot but didn't say anything ?."
Others brought up other failed reboots, including the Charmed reboot, with one fan expressing that the reality is that "fans want to see the old characters though."
Someone else simply expressed that if it isn't a reboot or a sequel, it's "simply a new show."
On the other hand, many appreciated Gellar for being so candid when discussing the classic TV series, writing, "This is such a treat. As someone who watched Buffy from when it aired (I was 7 when it started, now 35) I love seeing how much genuine joy Sarah has talking about her legacy."
While things may be moving slowly, in May 2025, Gellar revealed the lead actress for the series as Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with fans stunned as they were “Watching a slayer be called in real time!!!” Other newcomers joining the series include Faly Rakotohavana as Hugo, Ava Jean as Larkin, Sarah Bock as Gracie, Daniel di Tomasso as Abe and Jack Cutmore-Scott as Mr. Burke.
