If you were not aware, someone is having a birthday this year: America turns 250 years old.
The culmination of this special birthday will take place on July 4. Expect a lot of parades, special events, fireworks, and certainly much more.
I was 11 years old when the country celebrated its bicentennial. I recall the special feeling of witnessing the country turn 200 years old. Many of us neighborhood kids back in Pennsylvania ran around our town dressed up in red, white, and blue.
Some of our family also made their way to Valley Forge to celebrate the special occasion.

Also part of the special celebration was a Bicentennial Wagon Train Pilgrimage, which involved wagon trains from all across the country. As someone who has always been a fan of the Old West, seeing this wagon train convoy was rather cool.
Fast-forward many years later, and the nation is set to party again.
For example, if you watch the NFL, look for “America 250” to be stenciled on the sidelines. The league is also reportedly using commemorative footballs to highlight this year’s celebration.
With all that is going on here at home and abroad, it could be easy to lose sight of this special year.
There is no doubt we live in a polarized country these days.
Without getting into politics, I will simply say, in my opinion, this polarization happened a long time ago, well before the current occupant of the White House set foot there for the first time a decade ago.
Whether you agree or disagree with how the nation is being run these days, one thing many of us can agree on is that we are proud to call ourselves Americans.
When I am asked what the thing I’m most grateful for in life is, it is simply having been born in the United States. I cherish the fact that I was born in and have lived in the greatest country mankind has ever seen.
No matter how you celebrate this year, take some time to cherish all you have in being an American.
Happy 250th, America!
