Katie Leung rose to stardom as Cho Chang in several Harry Potter films. However, the racist backlash and painful comments she faced as a result of her casting in the blockbuster series were almost too much to bear.
Leung, now 37, opened up to The Guardian in a new interview about how she dealt with the onslaught of fame that came with life as a Harry Potter star alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson in the film adaptations ofJ.K. Rowling's iconic wizard series.
“I don’t think I did,” she told the publication when asked how she dealt with the fame. “It was overwhelming from the get-go. Being in the spotlight from that age, when you’re already insecure, was difficult, to say the least.”
She soon went online, wondering what people were saying about her. That's when she discovered much of the racist backlash.
“At that age, you’re curious," she said. "I remember being very curious about what people were saying about me, and I was Googling myself. Nobody could have stopped me, because I was old enough to make up my own mind.”
It was painful to read, and Leung said she "didn't" deal with what she read.
"I think it just sat with me, and it affected me in ways like, ‘Oh yeah, I made that decision because people were saying this about me.’ It probably made me less outgoing. I was very self-aware of what was coming out of my mouth.”
How the Bullying Began
In a 2021 episode of the Chinese Chippy Girl podcast, Leung recalled that the bullying began after someone took a "secret photo" of her that wound up in newspapers, PEOPLE reported. Soon after, she was hit with an onslaught of messages.
"I was like, Googling myself at one point and I was on this website, which was kind of dedicated to the Harry Potter fandom, and I remember reading all the comments. It was a lot of racist s—," she said. "And then somebody had actually created a website, a hate site — it was like, if you disagree with this casting, then click on this button and then it would just be like a count of how many people disagreed with the casting and you would just see a number. I know, it's awful. It's so awful."

Heading to the World of Bridgerton
While she used to be known as a child star, Leung is thriving in adulthood. She will soon take on the role of Lady Araminta Gun in the fourth season of Netflix's powerhouse Regency series Bridgerton.
“I feel really blessed, genuinely,” she told the publication. “It feels quite familiar, in a sense. Also, I’m older, and at a place in my life where I’m not too fazed going into something seemingly so huge.”
