Israeli army detains four civilians in Quneitra

Israeli army forces detained four young men at dawn today, Thursday 8 January, on the Jubata al-Khashab, Ain al-Bayda road in the Quneitra countryside (southwestern Syria), after setting up a temporary checkpoint in the area, a journalist from Quneitra Governorate told Enab Baladi, asking not to be named for security reasons.

The journalist said the checkpoint was set up at around 11:30 p.m., when Israeli forces stopped passersby on the road, searched them, then allowed them to leave, except for two motorcycles carrying four young men.

She added that checkpoint personnel searched the young men and detained them.

The young men are between 18 and 22 years old. No reasons for the detention were given, nor was it clear where they were taken.

According to the journalist, the young men’s families headed to the checkpoint site at around 2:00 a.m. and found the two motorcycles there, while Israeli forces had already withdrawn from the area.

The young men remain in custody as of the time of publication.

The incursion and detentions came two days after the fifth round of Syrian Israeli talks concluded in Paris, where the two sides agreed to immediately halt all Israeli military activities against Syria.

The Israeli army also demolished and blew up the “Old Golan Hospital” (al-Hajar) in the destroyed city of Quneitra on 6 January. The hospital is a historic landmark in the city.

The “Old Golan Hospital” is considered one of the most prominent architectural and historical features in the devastated city of Quneitra. The building stands as a symbol of the destruction that befell the city between 1967 and 1974. Its ruins remain as evidence of the systematic destruction that targeted Quneitra after its residents were evacuated, according to Quneitra-based journalist Nour Golan.

Israeli military vehicles also entered several towns in the Quneitra countryside on 6 January, amid intensive reconnaissance flights, while continuing to maintain positions at military sites inside the area.

According to Nour Golan, an Israeli military force made up of about 12 vehicles carrying soldiers entered Sida Golan, where troops deployed around the town and set up a military checkpoint at the western entrance, alongside drone flights monitoring the area.

He added that the force carried out searches that included a home in the town.

Israeli forces also opened fire from the base where they are stationed in Hamidiyah town in the Quneitra countryside, directly toward civilians’ homes in the town, with no information reported about injuries.

    Ongoing violations

Quneitra and Daraa (southern Syria) have seen a noticeable escalation in Israeli army violations in recent weeks, including repeated military incursions, gunfire, arrests, and direct targeting of civilians, in what residents and local sources describe as repeated breaches of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

On 24 December 2025, the Israeli army struck the al-Mantara Dam in the northern Quneitra countryside with a bomb dropped from a drone, alongside the firing of illumination flares toward Tal Kroum, and smoke-bomb attacks that affected women and children while they were gathering mushrooms between al-Qahtaniyah and Ruwayhina.

On 25 December 2025, the Israeli army fired in an apparent attempt to intimidate civilians who were gathering mushrooms near Asha, alongside the incursion of military patrols into Ain Ziwan, Kudna, and Suwaysah, obstructing residents’ movement and searching passersby. The forces also continued establishing and fortifying military points on western Tal al-Ahmar.

The escalation continued on 27 and 28 December 2025, with eastern Tal al-Ahmar targeted with machine guns for two consecutive days. A military force consisting of six vehicles and an armored personnel carrier also entered Jubata al-Khashab in northern Quneitra, in addition to an earlier incursion into Ain Ziwan on 25 December 2025.

On 30 December 2025, Israeli forces entered Asha and detained a shepherd after shooting him, as the area saw broad military movements, including temporary checkpoints between Ain Ziwan and Kudna, and the advance of a convoy of about 100 personnel from western Tal al-Ahmar toward eastern Tal al-Ahmar, with intensive drone activity.

Violations continued on 31 December 2025, with machine-gun fire and illumination flares launched from western Tal al-Ahmar toward eastern Tal al-Ahmar, following incursions and temporary checkpoints near Ruwayhina and al-Mushayrifah, as well as the detention of a resident in Asha.

At the start of the current year, on 1 January, the Israeli army fired at civilians while they were herding livestock and picking mushrooms near Rafid, killing a number of animals, after a patrol entered from the direction of al-Adnaniyah and fired illumination flares in the area.

On 2 January, an Israeli force advanced toward the abandoned Jamlah Company site in the Yarmouk Basin (western Daraa countryside), then withdrew after a temporary deployment.

On 3 January, a force of eight military vehicles entered Bariqa and Old Bariqa in the southern Quneitra countryside, continuing a series of movements that have become almost daily in the area.

Israeli army violations in southern Syria have continued since the fall of the former regime in December 2024, including incursions, detentions, shelling, and restrictions on residents.
