Goals Galore, Great Vibes, Bedard Back Soon? Hiding Hofer, Utah Classic, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

How about a little caffeinated applause for the boys last night, eh? The Blackhawks put boot to [donkey] on the St. Louis Blues last night, putting a touchdown on the board and kicking the extra point for good measure. Most impressively, the Hawks had seven goals from seven different skaters last night — and one of them was not the team’s leader, Tyler Bertuzzi. The depth scoring we’ve been longing for is starting to really show out.

Whenever you have a handful of guys with multi-point efforts and put a fat number on the board, it’s a fun night to check in on the analytics community’s evaluations of the Blackhawks’ performance. I feel terrible for poor Wyatt Kaiser and Artyom Levshunov. Your team puts Brent Seabrook’s number on the board and you’re minus-two in the game. Tough night for the two young guys. We’ll talk a little more about them later in our bullets, though.

    — HockeyStatCards (@hockeystatcards) January 8, 2026 If the game scores at the top of the sheet for Matt Grzelcyk and Connor Murphy look like outliers, they are. The good folks who put together these game score cards confirmed Grzelcyk and Murphy’s game scores are the highest of the season for the Blackhawks.

    — HockeyStatCards (@hockeystatcards) January 8, 2026 Last night during the broadcast, Darren Pang mentioned that Connor Bedard might be ready to come back tomorrow night when the Blackhawks host the Washington Capitals. Bedard clearly really wants to get back in game action — and who can blame him? The Blackhawks are on a heater right now. But, while Panger floated a potential return and Bedard wants to be back, the coach wasn’t quite ready to commit to a timeline. Here’s what Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said about Bedard potentially returning for one of the games coming up this weekend (Friday at home against the Caps, at Nashville on Saturday):

“We’ll see.… give me a chance to see how today went. He took a little more contact stuff today, and then see how tomorrow goes. So, before I kind of talk on that, let’s see where it goes.”

Here’s Bedard chatting with the TNT crew during the intermission last night:

Oliver Moore gets the TNT interview postgame. Worth the watch: pic.twitter.com/f6IYqjsfTK

    — BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) January 8, 2026 I know I’ve said this before, but the vibes being as good as they are in the Blackhawks’ room right now is so refreshing after the last couple years of old guys cashing checks and going home. Moore is one of those 20-something kids that Bedard said is just travelling the country having the time of his life right now.

Oliver Moore on the win streak: "It’s exciting. I would be lying if I said it’s not a ton of fun in here, just with the group we have. Coming into the rink every day, it’s just my favorite part of the day."

    — Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) January 8, 2026 One more thing from last night’s postgame comments from Moore, though. And I’ve brought this up this season already, but it bears repeating. Moore was asked about the win streak and his comments were focused on two things: the playoffs, and the process. He said they aren’t focused too much on the standings, but know what and who they’re chasing to get into the postseason. That nuanced shift to a bunch of young guys who have won at other levels being focused on getting into the postseason continues to be impressive. Yes, they’re young. And yes, they’re learning. Moore also added the caveat that they are still focusing on the process more than the results. But it’s hard to deny the results right now; the Blackhawks are still undefeated in 2026. From the time Spencer Knight arrived last year, there’s been a focus on getting this program to the next level. And it looks like the Blackhawks have the horses now to make the second half of this season interesting. Let’s circle back now and talk about the Blackhawks’ blue line for a moment, shall we? Scott Powers at The Athletic opened his 15 thoughts column this week with some comments about how well Artyom Levshunov is playing right now. The Blackhawks coaches are encouraging him to be a rover and continue to play a more aggressive game.

Something has clicked for Blackhawks defenseman Artyom Levshunov lately. He's being much more aggressive with the puck lately. That and much more in my 15 thoughts t.co/5ZJ7SPCqQQ

    — Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) January 7, 2026 And why has Levshunov been more comfortable and confident lately? Maybe because he’s back with Wyatt Kaiser as his primary defensive partner. Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times perfectly timed this terrific piece about how Kaiser continues to be a rock on the Blackhawks’ back end who complements Levshunov so well.

It’s no coincidence Artyom Levshunov is playing his best hockey since being reunited with Wyatt Kaiser.Kaiser’s chameleon nature is the glue that holds the Blackhawks’ defense together.New story: t.co/BKRhioV8Bw

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 7, 2026 One other note from Powers’ 15 thoughts:

In the 11 games without Bedard, you could make an argument for [Jason] Dickinson being the Blackhawks’ most valuable player. Of the players who played in all 11 games, Dickinson is the only player with an on-ice goals percentage greater than 50. The Blackhawks have outscored teams 9-7 and have a 50.95 expected goals percentage with Dickinson on the ice in five-on-five play.

I’m being told the Blackhawks just scored on Jordan Binnington. Again. I usually don’t like kicking a team when they’re down, but… this is the Blues. What the hell is going on there? Last night, Jim Montgomery tried to pull Binnington and was told no(?) by a guy who had already allowed seven (7!) goals. And when Montgomery looked for the goalie to replace Binnington, Joel Hofer (who, reminder, allowed eight goals to the Blackhawks earlier this year), he was… hiding? Like… really?

After the Blackhawks scored their 7th of the game, Jim Montgomery tried to pull Jordan Binnington for Joel Hofer…But Binnington appeared to refuse to come off the ice, and Hofer was hiding down the tunnel to the Blues' locker room? pic.twitter.com/j2V7q5bze4

    — Gino Hard (@GinoHard_) January 8, 2026 I hope by now y’all are starting to figure out that sometimes I write stories with more in mind. Like… I write about the Blackhawks’ potential trade pieces when there might be a whiff of smoke in the air. Why maybe highlight that now? The Blackhawks have hosted three games since the calendar flipped to 2026. In the press box to critically observe those games in a scouting capacity: seven (7) teams represented by someone with a title of either assistant general manager, director of pro scouting, director of player personnel or head of pro scouting. And not your usual “team the Blackhawks/their opponent are playing in a few days” folks, either. Before last night’s game started we learned of the passing of Blackhawks legend Glenn Hall. Here is the statement from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman: Sadly, the Blackhawks had to do some quick turnaround work to observe a moment of silence for both Hall and Bob Pulford, who passed away earlier this week. It was a nice touch that they had some old interview footage from in-game features they played back in the day from both of them to play during the two intermissions.

In the OHL, Blackhawks prospect Parker Holmes had an assist in Brantford’s 4-2 win over Niagara last night. The Edmonton Oilers placed Adam Henrique on injured reserve. He is expected to return following the Olympic break. Finally, the Utah Mammoth will host the Colorado Avalanche in the 2027 NHL Winter Classic. The game will be played at Rice-Eccles Stadium, the football stadium at the University of Utah. Sounds awesome!
