Law enforcement officials on Wednesday said a deadly crash that shut down a busy intersection in Stockton on Tuesday night involved a driver who had just fled the scene of a hit-and-run.
Stockton police said officers responded around 8:18 p.m. Tuesday to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Golden Gate Avenue.
On Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol's Stockton division said one of the vehicles was a Chevy Tahoe that was in the process of fleeing a hit-and-run that happened further east on Golden Gate Avenue at Farmington Road. Both crashes occurred within a minute of each other, Stockton police said.
When officers arrived at the second crash scene, police said they found two adult men who were transported to a local hospital with injuries that were initially described as unknown in severity. The only occupants of the vehicles were the drivers.
Stockton police later confirmed that one of the men had since died as a result of his injuries. It was not yet clear which of the drivers had died. No identity has been released, and no arrest has been made as of late Wednesday afternoon, the CHP said.
The crash forced an extended closure of the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Golden Gate Avenue.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information is encouraged to contact the Stockton Police Department.
