Rockies add pitching depth with right-hander Keegan Thompson

The Rockies continue to troll the waiver wire in an attempt to boost their pitching.

On Wednesday, the club added 30-year-old right-hander Keegan Thompson to its 40-man roster.

The Rockies claimed Thompson from the Reds, who signed him in the fall but designated him for assignment in December when they needed a major league roster spot for newly signed outfielder JJ Bleday.

Thompson is out of minor league options. He’ll pitch on a split deal in 2026, making $1.3 million in the majors.

Thompson, a third-round pick by the Cubs out of Auburn in 2017, could provide the Rockies with some versatility. He’s been both a starter and a reliever and could be used as a long reliever or perhaps as an opener should the Rockies decide to use that strategy. The Rockies had a collective 5.99 ERA in 2025, including a 6.65 ERA by their starters.

The righty has had a modicum of big-league success. He’s pitched 227 2/3 innings over his career, all with the Cubs. He’s posted a 3.64 ERA over 104 appearances (23 starts) from 2021-24. In 2024, he worked exclusively as a reliever and pitched well — a 2.67 ERA over 30 1/3 innings and had a career-best 28.3% strikeout rate.

However, he was designated for assignment by the Cubs last March and outrighted to Triple-A Iowa, where he spent the entire 2025 season.

He became a free agent in October and was signed by the Reds on Nov. 4.

The Rockies’ 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.
