Ogden neighbors voice concerns over Amazon facility expansion

OGDEN, N.Y. — Neighbors in Ogden expressed concerns about noise and light pollution from a nearby Amazon facility, as the company purchased additional property across the street.

Noise from backup alarms and trailer movements are among the issues Kevin Dennis face.

Dennis’ next door neighbor, shared similar experiences.

“During the night, there are hundreds of trailers that they move around there, and you can hear the air brakes go, you know, the clanking of connecting the trailers to the tractors,” said Frank Debona.

Concerns also extend to traffic safety. A neighbor worried about Amazon workers who take the bus and have to walk down Shepard Road without sidewalks.

“It’s now, kind of become a hazard for the people walking down the street. It’s definitely noticeable for the cars at night,” said Heather Fonte.

The light, noise, and traffic safety issues the neighbors experienced are heightened now that Amazon purchased the property across the street from 119 Shepard Road last month.

“So if some of these things aren’t fixed with the light, the noise, the traffic, the lack of sidewalks before building a second facility, it’s only going to magnify the problems that we already have,” a neighbor said.

Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale said the town urged Amazon to address the light and noise concerns. In response, Amazon altered the lights at the sorting facility in November and plans to build a berm for noise reduction.

Regarding employees walking to work, Zale said RTS informed him that Amazon needs to reach out and create an on-demand route to transport workers directly to the facility.

Amazon provided a statement saying, “We strive to be a good neighbor everywhere we operate and we take community feedback – like we’ve received in Rochester – seriously. As a result of these conversations, we’ve adjusted our operations. We now use white noise backup alarms on vehicles to reduce the noise at this facility, and we’ve installed shields on our outdoor lighting to limit light pollution. We’ll remain engaged with our neighbors in Rochester and appreciate them working with us.”

The facility in Ogden opened in September to process packages 24/7 in its 208,000 square-foot space. Amazon also has a fulfillment center on Manitou Road in Gates.
