Manchester United’s first match since Ruben Amorim’s abrupt departure yielded a mere point away to Premier League strugglers Burnley as Darren Fletcher’s men could only secure a 2-2 draw.
United sacked Amorim on Monday after seemingly falling out with club bosses and former midfielder Fletcher stepped up from his role in charge of the Under-18s to lead the Red Devils at Turf Moor.
Fletcher was able to welcome captain Bruno Fernandes back into the starting XI following a spell out with a hamstring injury and he looked sharp as United dominated the first half.
But after a fluke own goal put Burnley in front, United didn’t get on the scoresheet until the second period, as Benjamin Sesko ended his goal drought.
He scored again to put the away side in front, only for a Jaidon Anthony strike to restore parity again and ultimately earn Burnley a share of the spoils.
As a result, United missed the opportunity to go fourth in the table, while a draw also didn’t do much good for the Clarets’ dwindling survival hopes.
Burnley benefited from a huge slice of luck to open the scoring in the 13th minute, Bashir Humphreys’ cross taking a massive deflection off Ayden Heaven and looping into the United net.
The visitors’ response was decent, however. Sesko looked a threat, while Lisandro Martínez had a goal harshly disallowed for grappling at a corner.
Matheus Cunha had a header cleared off the line, and then Patrick Dorgu endured a similar fate with a clever dink on the stroke of half-time.
United’s inability to score by the break meant Burnley became the first team to lead a Premier League match at half-time without managing a shot on target since Wolves vs Manchester City in September 2023.
Similarly, United’s six shots on target was their most without scoring in the first half of a league game for over seven years.
But United were deservedly level soon after half-time as Sesko latched on to Fernandes’ through ball and finished past Martin Dúbravka for the Slovenian’s first league goal since 4 October.
He doubled his tally for the day on the hour, expertly guiding Dorgu’s inviting cross into the right side of the net – and the sense at this point was United could romp home to a significant win given their dominance.
But perhaps spurred on by the withdrawal of the influential Fernandes, Burnley hit back quickly and in style; Anthony picking out the top-left corner from just inside the area after making a yard of space for himself.
United substitute Shea Lacey almost scored an even better goal with his first involvement after coming on, as the teenager darted in from the right and saw a left-footed strike cannon back off the crossbar.
Another long-range effort from Lacey with practically the last kick of the game then nearly found the top-right corner, but ultimately United had to settle for a point.

Burnley vs Man Utd Stats: Post-Match Facts
Burnley scored twice in a home league game against Manchester United for the first time since February 1968. They’d only scored twice overall in their first nine Premier League meetings with them at Turf Moor. Manchester United have drawn three consecutive Premier League games for the first time since December 2018. Burnley are winless in their last 12 Premier League games (D3 L9), their joint-longest run in a single campaign (also 12 between November and January in 2009-10). Benjamin Sesko scored two goals tonight, as many as he had in his first 16 Premier League appearances for Man Utd. Tonight was just his third brace in the big five European leagues, after September 2023 (vs Union Berlin) and September 2024 (vs Augsburg). Man Utd’s Bruno Fernandes has provided more assists than any other player in the Premier League this season (8), while only in 2020-21 (12) and 2024-25 (10) has he provided more in a single campaign.Enjoy this?
