ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Trump administration is withholding funding for child and family assistance programs in five Democratic-led states due to fraud claims. This decision could impact local programs like the Child Care Council, which helps families find suitable childcare.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with Jeff Pier, CEO of the Child Care Council, about the potential effects of the funding freeze.
“If the freeze does occur, that funding could be put on hold, jeopardizing their ability to pay for childcare, jeopardizing the program’s ability to stay open because they’re not going to be able to pay their bills,” Pier said.
Pier explained that part of the Child Care Council’s work includes helping new childcare programs get registered. He said the funding freeze would make this process much more difficult.
“Without this resource, you’re not going to have new programs start up. You’re not going to be able to vet and support the childcare programs with the work they do and make sure that they have the educational and safety tools necessary to run a safe program,” Pier said.
Pier emphasized that families are the true victims of the funding freeze.
“If you cannot pay for childcare, you can’t go to work. You have to stay home with your child. That impacts the economy, that impacts the family lifestyle. You might have to have a family member quit their job or go down to part-time hours. Why would we want to do that to families?” Pier said.
Pier also expressed skepticism about the Trump administration’s fraud claims.
“I don’t know what Trump is trying to find, locally or at New York State, but I know in this area, I know the dollars are being handled very well,” Pier said.
The Department of Health and Human Services stated that no state will receive childcare funds without further verification. However, several states reported they have not been given guidance on what that entails.
