Mark Hoppus has never been shy about sharing the behind-the-scenes moments that shaped Blink-182. One of the 53-year-old's latest stories perfectly captures the band’s unlikely mix of heart, humor, and chaos.
Speaking with Danielle Fishel on her new podcast Teen Beat, the bassist and co-founder revealed that his own father, Tex Hoppus, didn’t fully believe the band had "made it" until years after the Blink-182 actually formed.
"My dad didn’t think our band was successful until '99 or maybe even 2000," Hoppus said on the podcast. Despite watching Blink-182 play for increasingly large crowds, it wasn't until the band appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno that the reality finally sank in.
That particular night became unforgettable for another reason, too. Blink-182 shared the episode with fitness icon Richard Simmons. Before taping, everyone gathered in the green room.
According to Hoppus, the door suddenly flew open and Simmons burst in, loudly calling out the band’s name. He immediately grabbed Tom DeLonge, kissed him on the cheek, then did the same to Hoppus and drummer Travis Barker.
Never missing a comedic beat, Hoppus took the opportunity to ask Simmons how to get in shape. Simmons shot back that Hoppus was "old enough to be his dad." That’s when Hoppus' father chimed in, announcing, "I'm his dad."
What happened next felt straight out of a sitcom.
"Richard Simmons goes, 'Dad!' and gives him a giant kiss on the cheek," Hoppus recalled, before Simmons ran out of the room entirely. Moments later, Blink-182 headed out to perform on The Tonight Show — a milestone moment that finally convinced Hoppus’ dad the band had truly arrived.
