Stranger Thingsstar Jamie Campbell Bowershared his perspective on Henry Creel/Vecna's backstory as well as the character's potential redemption arc on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
SPOILER—This post includes spoilers from the Stranger Things series finale.
In the days following the release of the Stranger Things finale, the internet has been abuzz with conspiracy theories, complaints and a spectrum of opinions on whether the show stuck the landing.
The finale also left several unanswered questions (some intentional and others seemingly less so), the most significant of which being whether Eleven survived or if she really did die when the Upside Down was destroyed.
One of two major confirmed deaths in Season 5, however, was Vecna's, and it was easily the most dramatic death of the season and one of the most dramatic in the show overall. This was in part because Vecna was such a major villain, but it was also by nature of the scene itself, in which Joyce Byers took multiple swings at Vecna's neck, ultimately decapitating him.
Bower spoke about that scene with Jimmy Fallon and, in addition to sharing that it was "pretty cool" to be killed by Winona Ryder, articulated that there was a message he was trying to convey in Vecna's final moments: "Please don't."

For one, it's clear that Bower has an interest in the idea that Henry could have been redeemed, not only with him wanting these to be Vecna's final words, but also with his comments about young Henry just needing some love and Vecna needing a hug.
This aligns with what the Duffer Brothershave previously shared about considering a redemption arc for Henry/Vecna, similar to that of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in Star Wars, but ultimately deciding that Henry was too far gone and had done too much at that point.
The other key aspect of Bower's comments connects to the canon Stranger Things spin-off play The First Shadow, which acts as a prequel story to the show. In the play, it is revealed that Henry attended school with the adults of Stranger Things, such as Joyce, Hopper and Karen, but that is never mentioned in the show—a complaint many viewers had following the finale.
It was evidently on Bower's mind while filming Season 5 regardless, though, as he shared, "When [Joyce] kind of walks up to him, I felt like in that moment that the humanity could come through a little bit more and that we could just reintroduce that level of sort of potential. Maybe he could be saved at that point."
What's particularly notable about this is the sense that it could have been Joyce herself, and Joyce's connection to young Henry, that saved him. However, in the end, that wasn't the ending for Vecna that the show chose.
