Should Ayo be Starting? 7 Expiring Contracts, Game Day in Detroit and Other Bulls Bullets

Good morning, Bulls fans. Tonight, Chicago heads on the road to face another Eastern Conference powerhouse, the top-seeded Detroit Pistons. Much like the matchup against Boston, this one doesn’t exactly scream “favorable outcome.” But maybe it’s another chance for Billy Donovan to experiment with the rotations and give the young guys a much-deserved run. And maybe, just maybe, they play well enough to sneak out a win.

Let’s talk Bulls basketball.

The Bulls will make the trip to Detroit for the second game of their road swing, and the first half of a back-to-back. Tomorrow, they’ll fly back to Chicago for Game Two. The Pistons currently sit atop the Eastern Conference with a 27–9 record. They feature a top-10 offense and the league’s second-best defense, meaning the Bulls will have to work for every point they get.

    — Pistons PR (@Pistons_PR) January 3, 2026 Speaking of tinkering with rotations, I have a serious gripe with the Bulls’ incessant refusal to start Ayo Dosunmu, even with all the roster absences. I get it: Ayo has looked great off the bench and runs that unit really well. But that doesn’t mean he can’t start. If Billy Donovan staggers his minutes properly, Ayo can get the team off on the right foot, still run with the bench, and close games. Over the last six contests, he’s averaging 14 points, five assists, four rebounds, and a steal per game, all while coming off the bench. At least for now, with Coby and Giddey still ramping back up, let Ayo take a run at the top. And if the goal is truly one ball-handler per unit, try bringing Tre Jones off the bench and see what that looks like. Ayo is on an expiring contract, and giving him more minutes could only help. If the Bulls don’t plan on re-signing him, those extra reps boost his trade value. And if they do want to keep him, they’ll at least get a clearer picture of what he can do with real, starting-level playing time.

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) January 4, 2026 Ayo is just one of seven expiring contracts the Bulls are dealing with. Online personality and host of the NOTB show on Peacock, and a massive Bulls fan, Kenny Beecham (KOT4Q) recently posed a great question on Twitter: what should the team do with all those expiring deals? “Let them expire and have $100M in cap space? Trade them for bad salary and future assets? Attempt to buy low on someone?”

The Bulls have 7 expiring contracts and I cant wait to see what they do with them. Let them expire and have $100M in cap space?Trade them for bad salary and future assets?Attempt to buy low on someone?

    — KENNY BEECHAM (@KOT4Q) January 6, 2026 For me, the answer is somewhere in the middle. I’d want to get something back for the players who actually have value, and let the rest walk to create cap space. The guys I think still hold real value are Nikola Vucevic, Zach Collins, Coby White, Jalen Smith, Ayo Dosunmu, and Kevin Huerter, players who can all log meaningful minutes on competitive teams. The Bulls should be aggressive in trying to get returns for them. The worst-case scenario is Chicago re-signs everyone and decides to run it back. God, please no. At least the Bulls are trying to get their fans excited. They announced the return of fan-favorite Yuki Kawamura on a two-way contract, replacing Trentyn Flowers. Yuki is a 5’7″ point guard from Japan who appeared in 22 games with the Grizzlies last season. He originally signed with the Bulls in the preseason but was waived after suffering a leg injury. Now he’s back, and Bulls fans (and even plenty of NBA fans) are genuinely happy to see it.

    — FIBA Basketball (@FIBA) January 7, 2026 In some rather unfortunate news, with Josh Giddey sidelined by a hamstring injury, it feels like NBA fans are starting to forget about him. The second returns of All-Star fan voting came out yesterday, and Giddey is slipping down the top 20. After the first returns he was 14th, now he’s 19th, with just a week to go. I’m sure he’ll make an All-Star appearance at some point in his career, he’s only 23. But it’s starting to look like this season won’t be his first.
