Ben Johnson Shares What He Wants From Caleb Williams This Week

Chicago Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson didn’t drop any bulletin board material in his Tuesday press conference. However, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson has turned the page and moved his focus onto Packers Week 3.0. And with that, comes some encouraging words regarding where quarterback Caleb Williams stands going into his first-ever playoff start.

When Johnson spoke to the media on Tuesday, three quotes about his quarterback stood out to me:

“He’s a completely different quarterback than when we first took this job. I think back to the springtime during camp and some of the struggles that we were having as an offense in those moments. We’ve certainly moved past that. I’m encouraged for where he’s at right now.”

This speaks to the in-season growth Caleb Williams has made in his first year under Ben Johnson’s direction. The NFL calendar moves so quickly that it can be easy to forget the humble beginnings (and humbling moments) that happened before we made it to this point. For instance, do you recall Johnson quizzing his quarterback or asking him to make a *BIG* change to his mechanics back in the spring? Probably not. And those summertime struggles in training camp feel like a distant memory, too. It all speaks to the development that the Johnson-Williams tandem has made this season.

“I know he’s really looking forward to this opportunity to go out there. He’s played some good football here, particularly in the back half of the season for us, and we’re going to need that. We’re going to need him at his best. We’re going to need all of our players at their best.”

Even though the Bears went 2-3 down the stretch, Caleb Wiliams put up some solid numbers. The completion percentage (58.1%) still isn’t where any of us want it to be, but he threw for 1,220 yards, tossed 10 touchdowns, was intercepted just twice, and posted a 94.6 passer rating. If you were to extrapolate those numbers over a full 17-game season, they would come out to 4,148 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. If Williams could do that over a full season, then The Iceman moniker could stick. At a minimum, Williams’ December numbers hint at his ability to make things happen in the winter months.

“I think he’s primed and he’s ready to go. He was built for these moments. He plays his best when we need him to, and so there’s really not a whole lot that needs to be said. He just needs to be him.”.

You know you’ve got a good thing going with your coach and quarterback when one doesn’t have to say anything to the other. Everyone knows what is on the line this week. Ben Johnson doesn’t need to give any rah-rah speeches. And Caleb Williams doesn’t need to do anything out of the ordinary. If these two stay on the path that they have been on all year, Chicago will have a chance to take down Green Bay and give this Bears-Packers trilogy a happy ending.

More From Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson

One last Ben Johnson quote that stood out to me was what he said about this team’s flair for the dramatic:

“We’re never out it. Our guys know that. We certainly don’t want to have to lean into that each and every week. We’d like to start off a little bit faster and make it more of a complete game for 60 minutes. Teams understand when they play us now that they have to earn it. They have to really close us out of it if they want the victory because we can score points in bunches. We can do it in a short amount of time, and we’ve proven that.”
