‘Chicago P.D.’ Boss Teases ‘Chaotic’ and Pulse-Pounding Midseason Return (Exclusive)

Despite the cliffhanger midseason finale for Season 13 of Chicago Fire, the question that is really on everyone’s mind is not so much what happens to Officer Eva Imani (Arienne Mandi) if Raymond Bell (Barry Del Sherman) finds her illegally in his house. Rather, when will Patrick John Flueger, who plays Adam Ruzek, return?

Back in October, it was announced that Flueger was taking a temporary leave of absence from his role. What was unknown then and is still unknown is how many episodes Flueger will miss and how that affects Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati), who plays his wife and fellow Intelligence Unit team member.

“We’ll definitely have more answers to that,” showrunner Gwen Sigan tells Parade when asked about the original cast member’s status. “Once we return, you’ll get little bits and pieces. That’s all I can really say at the moment.”

Luckily, Sigan can talk more about where the cop drama picks up when it returns from the winter break and what happens.

“We pick right back up, and it becomes pretty chaotic, very adrenalized,” she says. “It’s a ticking clock for the team. Can they get [to Bell’s house] quickly enough, and then once they do, can we discover what’s going on with the Bells quick enough to make sure [his granddaughter] Julie’s [Julianna Layne] okay as well?”

According to Sigan, there’s a lot of emotion as well as adrenaline in the “Born Screaming” episode, airing tonight. Imani went with her impulse and decided to enter the house because she feared Julie was in danger, but it was against everything Voight (Jason Beghe) had been telling her to do.

“Even though Voight understands being impulsive and understands that she’s very similar to him in a lot of ways, he’s not very happy with that decision and that she put her life at stake and also the case at stake,” Sigan continues. “So, we get to see a lot of that fallout and in the process, learn a lot about her and her past and see that bond between the two of them grow a little closer at the end of the episode as well.”

We will also see more of the game between Voight and Bell, because even though Voight’s putting Bell through an interrogation that saw Bell make one mistake, Bell still thinks he’s the smartest man in any room and wants to continue his cat-and-mouse strategy with the police.

“We do see that Bell does act in a way after that, that is definitely in direct reaction to Voight pushing him,” Sigan says. “But then we also see a side of Bell in Episode 8 where he still wants to play them. He gets interested in Imani. There is this part of him that even though he knows they’re after him, he’s going to keep thinking that he’s moving the pawns around the game board.”

Watching Voigt interact with Imani has been entertaining because of the aforementioned fact that the two characters are very similar in their approach to policing: ask for forgiveness instead of permission. The result of that is that Imani actually makes Voight look like he has more control that previously.

“This case really triggers her, and we’ve obviously seen that there are plenty of things that can trigger him,” Sigan says. “So, you get a lot more depth into that idea of the two of them and what does control look like? Why does Voight feel that sometimes he has it and sometimes he doesn’t? Where the hell does it even come from, this idea that he’s this instinctual man that takes action first and apologizes later? Why is he like that? Why is she like that?”

Sigan promises some answers to those questions, as well as how Voight comes to realize what an ally he had in ADA Chapman (Sara Bues), which ended in the Season 12 finale when Voight arranged to have Deputy Chief Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy) assassinated by Otero’s son Rennie (Jason Sanchez). Now, Voight has had to find himself a new ADA to work with, who isn’t as pliable.

“It’s a great obstacle for Voight,” Sigan says. “I don’t even think he realized the amount of help that Chapman was to him and to the Intelligence Unit. It’s something that we keep going into the next few episodes. You see that we had it pretty easy with her. We were able to get a lot of things signed off on with her backing us, and she had a good reputation. So, when she did back Intelligence, judges would sign off, and that’s not the case anymore. So, Voight has to be a little more thorough, and it is making him realize, ‘Oh, I had this important person on my side backing me up, and that’s gone because of my actions.’”

That said, Sign does share that at some point in time, Chapman, who also had a romantic interest in Voight, could get past it.

“It would take her a long time, but I think there’s hope,” she says.

Chicago P.D.airs Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
